Aeternus
...And So The Night Became

Genre:Blackend Death MetalFormat:CDTracks:8
Label:Hammerheart RecordsYear:1998

Rarely have I heard such originality and such a contrast between total beauty and sick, seething evil. With the production, guitar distortion, drumming and vocals, Aeternus may initially fool the swift of ear. The sound itself seems to be death metal, but upon closer attention, the riffing and monotonous barrage of percussion have much more of a black metal feel. As soon as I listened to …And So the Night Became just once through, I knew it would easily be one of my “Top 10″ favorites of all time. No matter how many times I play this CD, it never gets old. I discover something new each time. Song by song, this release is an intrinsic journey through time and emotion starting in it’s primitive beginnings and ending in total complexity, bewilderment, speed, beauty, and then back to a peaceful end. The first track, “There’s No Wine Like The Bloods Crimson”, is a droning war-like march containing only a few riffs but a steady and fucking sick drumming pattern. The CD continues to pick up pace, intensity, and melody with “As I March”, “Warrior Of The Crescent Moon”, and “Blodsverging”. The storm of Aeternus treads forth, ever-increasing in power with the majesty of “When The Crows Shadow Falls”, “Ild Dans”, and the amazing title track “…And So The Night Became”. Ending with the instrumental track “Fyrndeheimen”, the grasp of Aeternus releases and the onslaught is over. For now.
