Although I tend to pass the black metal promos I receive onto other staff writers, I have heard my fair share of bands throughout the year. While I'm definitely not an expert on black metal I've heard enough to know what I like and what I don't like. Hungary's Aetherius Obscuritas is one of the many bands who rides the fine line between being good and being so average it hurts.
Viziok contains 12 tracks of high tempo melodic black metal in the vein of Taake and Ragnarok filled with tremolo picked harmonies, blast beats, high pitched rasps and cliché after cliché. The only thing that really sets this album apart from countless other releases is the production is clear enough that you can actually hear the guitars and it doesn't simply sound like a jar full of angry bees being shaken in front of a microphone.
The music itself is decent, but not overwhelming, I could tolerate listening to it longer than most black metal promos I receive, but it still didn't do anything to capture my attention. At best, this is a mediocre and rather generic black metal release, and honestly, I've already wasted too much time talking about it. Unless you're a huge fan of Taake and Ragnarok I doubt this album would interest you, and if you are, you have really shitty taste in black metal.
