Here we have the debut full length offering from Brazil’s Agorhy entitled Ruptura which contains 8 new tracks, 4 tracks from the band’s 2002 Evergrind demo and an additional 7 tracks from 2000’s Hybris demo. Agorhy describe their music as death grind, and while there is that element to their music, there’s also a strong thrash and nu metal influence to the band’s music.
Being Brazilian there’s no way for Agorhy to escape comparisons to Sepultura and Soulfly, especially not with the screamed Portuguese vocals and constant use of both bands riffs in their music. The best way to describe the music of Agorhy would be to take Roots and Chaos AD-era Sepultura and fuse it with hardcore and grindcore. The end result is high paced thrashy grindcore, with raspy screamed Portuguese hardcore-style vocals with lyrics that are often sung in a rap-styled cadence with Krisiun-style blasts. It’s not an entirely unpleasant musical style, but it’s not the most compelling either.
As a grindcore album it fails because of the odd vocal arrangements, but succeeds with it’s high tempo nearly relentless assault. As a death metal album it fails due to the vocal style and relentless grindcore assault, but succeeds with some pretty killer death metal riffs. Honestly, I think this is an album that fans of recent Sepultura and Soulfly would get into more than death grind fans, but I think Ruptura may be too fast and extreme for the nu metal fans. It’s just a really awkward album that doesn’t really fit into any specific genre. I think it’s obvious this band can develop a decent following with their brand of extreme music, but it’s just one of those albums you really need to hear for yourself and decide if you like it, either you’re going to like it or fucking hate it.
Personally, I’m not blown away by Ruptura, it’s okay for what it is, but it bores the shit out of me, it’s like listening to new Sepultura at triple speed, it’s okay, but nothing that makes me want to mosh. In fact, I don’t think I nodded my head once while listening to Ruptura. It’s aggressive, fast, furious and relentless, all good qualities in an album, but it just lacks that hook that makes me want to listen to it again. In fact, this is the last time I’m going to listen to Ruptura. Agorhy has a ton of potential, but until they pick a specific direction to go in I can’t be bothered to listen to this shit anymore. Meh!
