Oh how the mighty have fallen. Following the release of the mighty Ballspouter full length in 2002, Czech grinders Alienation Mental decided it was time for a change. Rather than continue along the musical path they’d created, they chose to go off in an entirely new direction, which lead to the departure of founding member, guitarist Michal, and with him went the grinding death chaos the band was renowned for. It is now 2005 and the band is down to a quartet and, as the bio on their website suggests, they’ve chosen to take a musical path with strong nu metal influences. And it sucks. Hard. Psychopathicolorspectrum starts out the first 30 seconds of the album with a blazing pummeling grinding fury they were known for, before quickly switching to a groovy nu-metal influenced deathcore sound, similar to recent Cock And Ball Torture mixed with NY slamcore. The musical approach is completely different from their past releases; it sounds nothing like Kopferkingel, Ball Spouter or their splits with Inhumate and Malignant Tumour. This is just uninspired slam riffs with lackluster vocals. The only high point on the album is the drumming of Jarda who continues to impress with his relentless pummeling, unfortunately, that’s the only nice thing I can say about this album. While the band paid tribute to Korn on the Kopferkingel demo, they did it in a manner that was heavy and grindy enough to be respectable. On Psychopathicolorspectrum they again pay tribute to Korn, only this time around it’s much much worse, with vocalist Milan attempting to sing in a Jonathan Davis whiney style, complete with his broken English accent, which is honestly one of the most painfully horrid vocal performances, from beginning to end. While I knew beforehand that the new Alienation Mental release was going to be a change musically, I didn’t think the change would be so dramatic and displeasing. This may very well become the worst album of 2005, and I can see why the other founding guitarist, Pavel, jumped ship shortly after the album was recorded. This is both an embarrassment and an abomination. Plus, what the fuck is with the retarded album title? Even in broken English it makes no sense. I wouldn’t even recommend this album to nu-metal kids; because I think even they would think it’s a piece of shit. It’s really that bad. I hope these guys go homeless for destroying one of my favorite new bands. I need a drink.
