I picked up this album in a local metal shop by accident. What I was actually looking for was the newest release by Switzerland’s Amok, but grabbed this one instead, not realizing it was a completely different band. Unlike the Swiss Amok, Norway’s Amok aren’t a technical death metal outfit, they are actually a blackened death thrash outfit. Needless to say when I tossed Necrospiritual Deathcore into the stereo pressed play and heard a death thrash attack flowing out of my speakers I was surprised and initially disappointed.
The album opens up with the track "Necropsy Cunt", a generic and rather dull old school American death metal-styled track. Following this disappointing opener, however, is 9 tracks of catchy mid to high paced death thrashing fun, starting with "Geithelvelte", a high-tempo blackened thrash track which is equal parts black metal and thrash. Surprisingly the combination of the two styles works really well together and forms a catchy aural assault. From there the album really takes shape with the catchiest song on the album, "Channeling Black Horns", a blackened death thrash track that feels like a black metal version of Ghoul or Impaled with a fun catchy thrashy melody, chugging riffs, deep rasps and black metal blasts.
The remaining tracks are all played in this same vein; blasting beats, catchy chugging riffs and raspy snarls. There’s no band I can think of that sounds anything like Amok, all I can say is this is one of the best mistakes I’ve made in a while. While this isn’t an album I’m going to be digging out on a regular basis, every time I play it, once I get past the first song, I don’t turn it off til the album is done, which is a rarity with me.
There’s enough good material on here to keep fans of blackened death thrash happy, and even if you’re not, who knows, you may find yourself banging your head to this album regardless. Definitely worth checking out and giving a listen to! Written By: Teufel
