Anasarca “Godmachine”

Anasarca
Godmachine

Genre:Death MetalFormat:CDTracks:11
Label:Repulse RecordsYear:1999

For once Dave Rotten has done something right. Although I’m usually left groaning after going through a batch of sub-par Repulse promos, Anasarca has me thrashing like a madman possessed. Formed by two former members of Germany’s godly Vomiting Corpses, Anasarca combine the harsh brutality of North American death metal with the technical and melodic elements of European death metal into a perfect blend of aggression, melody, brutality and technicality. Although they may not be the most technically skilled musicians, nor is their music the most original, it is extremely solid. Godmachine opens with the eerie heartbeat intro "The Way Into The Light", then smashing into the title track with double bass kicks abound and low tuned bass thundering along while the guitars take off on a catchy and brutal journey while sickeningly guttural vocals flow through the track with extremely well thought out patterns. The musical direction is the same throughout the CD, tight technical and brutal guitaring, high-paced blast beats and dual vocals, from deep guttural growls to high pitched black metal screams, with hints of melody and a decent groove throughout. While listening to Godmachine it’s easy to draw comparisons to a number of bands from Incantation to Monstrosity or Cryptopsy, obviously this band is on to something to be able to draw such comparisons. The vocals and drumming on the album are top notch, although I find the clicking of the bass drums to become a bit annoying at times. The thick catchy guitar sound and rumbling bass are great, although could use work and practice to get on pace with the likes of the aforementioned bands. If you have any sense at all you’ll pick up Godmachine, it’s definitely worth it.

Anasarca? Really? I bought this album over a decade ago, and I listened to it once. Once.
