Behemoth “Evangelion”

Behemoth
Evangelion

Genre:Death MetalFormat:CDTracks:9
Label:Metal Blade RecordsYear:2009

Prior to the release of 2008′s Ezkaton I honestly hadn’t paid much attention to Polish death metallers Behemoth. I’d been aware of their existence for more than 15 years, but never sought out their music. More than a decade of being subjected to the hype machine surrounding Decapitated and Vader, and the disappointment that came with actually listening to their boring, uninspired work, caused me to ignore the praises directed towards their fellow countrymen Behemoth, writing them off as another boring band not worthy of my attention.

That opinion changed the day I received a copy of Behemoth‘s Metal Blade Records debut EP Ezkaton in my post office box and decided to give them a listen. When I tossed the disc in I fully expected to be bored to tears and write a scathing review, but that all changed when I first heard “Chant for Ezkaton 2000 e.v.”, a re-recording of “Chant for Eschaton 2000” from 1999′s Satanica. Having never heard the original I had no idea what to expect, but I certainly did not expect the catchy high paced blackened death metal that screamed from my speakers. Then I listened to the track again. And again. And again. And again. By the time I wrote the review of the album I’d already listened to that single track more than 50 times and the album as a whole more than 20 times. Needless to say, I was impressed and looking forward to more.

Luckily, I didn’t have to wait long, as a mere 9 months after the release of Ezkaton, Behemoth unleashed Evangelion, the band’s ninth full length studio effort in their lengthy 18 year existence. Evangelion picks up right where Ezkaton left off as Behemoth unleash 9 tracks of up tempo melodic blasting blackened death metal splayed out over 42 minutes, with the band’s clearest production to date, courtesy of the renown Colin Richardson. The effort is filled with choppy riffs, catchy melodies, pummeling blasts and the raspy barks of front man Nergal.

On previous efforts Behemoth have occasionally sounded a little loose, but on Evangelion Behemoth are tighter than a pair of extra small spandex bicycle shorts on my bulging girthy package. Technically this may be Behemoth‘s sharpest studio effort to date with no obvious flaws and a very fluid performance by all four musicians. In some ways the group have simplified their sound, abandoning much of the theatrics prevalent on prior efforts, focusing more on letting the music speak for itself.

Despite having his kit triggered to shit, Zbigniew Prominski, unlike many death metal drummers who use a triggered kit, doesn’t rely solely on relentless blasts and has proven himself to be a highly capable drummer with a good ability of mixing up rhythms. On so many death metal albums the drummer seems to settle into one specific performance style and sticks to it throughout, but Prominski is able to blast like a maniac when needed, slow it down to a gentle crawl when needed and plays a surprisingly varied percussive assault.

The riffing and songwriting of Nergal and studio musician Patryk Sztyber of Nomad and Vesania is top notch. Both are very capable guitarists and combined have created a new layer of depth to the band’s sound with their sharp technical shredding, catchy melodic segments and entertaining trade-off solos spaced throughout the release. Backed by the powerful rumbling bass of Tomasz Wróblewski, and a much clearer and more natural vocal tone for Nergal and this quartet delivers some of the most entertaining and varied death metal released this year.

From beginning to end it’s clear Behemoth have taken a big step forward from being just a mere face in the crowd to one of the frontrunners in the genre. While Evangelion is clearly not as vicious and the band’s earliest studio efforts, it is by far their most varied, best produced and best written.

2 years ago, I couldn’t give two farts about Behemoth, but with the release of Evangelion and Ezkaton, I’m a converted fan and eager for more. While I won’t go as far as to say Evangelion is worthy of being regarded as a classic, it is a damn fine release and will remain in rotation for quite some time to come. Definitely a worthwhile purchase, even if the band does still dress like a bunch of World of Warcraft nerds who take their hobby far too seriously.  They look like gay He-Man villains in all of their press photos, what the fuck is up with that?

I enjoy Evangelion a lot. I was a little on the fence when I first heard Ov Fire and the Void but once I heard a few other tracks I was psyched for this release.

Some interesting sections here, but overall a decent offering, nothing extra ordinary by any means. I feel that their earlier releases had more originality, even though they were a cross platform for black/death metal.

This is the first time a Behemoth release has really caught my interest. I especially like the last track ‘Lucifer’, but then again, I’m a fucker for long songs.

This is a great album. It’s amusing how the kvlt metal sheep are pissing all over it without giving it a fair listen. This is as good an “exotic” death metal album as any this year and certainly much better than the new Nile which has probably gathered a few layers of fanboy jizz by now. Great songwriting, great playing, the ambient bits don’t overwhelm and are mixed in with great subtlety. One of my favourites from this year.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is “underground” metal fans are afraid of their music becoming popular. When they see bands they like playing big concerts and appealing to a broader audience they immediately assume the band has sold out and say they’re terrible, all because they don’t want to be a “poseur” for liking something that’s become popular, even if the band has actually gotten better.

      Metalheads are funny that way.

Picking over popularity as in, from an audience of 30 to 300, or 300 to 1000

I agree with this completely. This is a great band that has found a away to remain relevant and interesting as time has passed. It’s not about ‘selling out’ to me; it’s about sounding what I like to call ‘not stupid.’

Behemoth manages to sound evil and legitimate at the same time.

I had this CD literally stuck in my car CD player for 3 months and I fucking hate it. Though it was good the first 30 times I listened to it straight.

unlike the 13 year olds who re sitting in their bedrooms crying about how Behemoth “sold out”, I am quite pleased with this album and have been masturbating to it for the past couple of months. Long live being a kvlt bastard

Agreed. I have great respect for the underground scene and music but just because a band gets more popular doesn’t mean their music will start to suck. It just means that more and more little fan boys and girls will start ranting and raving about how each new release by said band is better than the last, which is why its important to set the record straight about the rest of a band’s discography. Behemoth is no different.

So you are masturbating right now? As we speak? To the sounds of GUYS? That’s hot mans, really hot. Can I get in on this man loving too? Ok, now that I am done my King Anus impression, what the hell is rong with you kid? Masteurbate to a girl sitting over you with beautiful breasts covering your face. Masturbate at the though of this occurrence that will never happen in your lifetime. Masturbate to knowing there is nothing more romantic than a beautiful girl who is beautiful on the inside, who cares about you, sees love as the special thing it truly is. A girl who loves you and only you, who recognizes the emotional connection between two people as being the ultimate goal and not sex. Masturbate to me shutting the hell up and then ending this by reminding you that this band hates your fucking guts and wants you to stop it right now or they will be forced to put out an entire album of Dimmu Burger and Cradle Of Filth covers, and dedicating it to YOU.

They’re getting worse, started losing interest after Demigod.

A good band. Good, not great. And this is their worst cd I believe. Certainly no excellent rsting this radio-friendly unit shifter make. But this band does have some weird nuances to it that just don’t make sense. Going from album to album miles may vary. Whatever the case, I am proud to have their stuff in my collection, because that’s me. I’m obsessed with everything death/black/grind. Others who want better quality pick this up in the $3 bargain bin used or go for their earlier stuff.

Actually this record reminds me of Belphegor.
