Having never heard this Montreal-based death metal act before, I wasn’t sure what to expect from their debut full length Mechanics Of Dysfunction, so I did some searching around the interweb to find out what I could about the band. Judging by the reviews of their Evidence Of Inequity EP, it seems as though Beneath The Massacre are a super technical death metal/deathcore/math metal act. Upon listening to this album I’ve come to my own conclusion, Beneath The Massacre are just straight up fucking annoying.
First of all, why the fuck are these drums triggered so goddamn much? It sounds like a giant mechanical beast farting, there are even moments when the triggering sounds so obvious I question whether Justin Rouselle is just the name of a drum machine. A lot of the drumming sounds straight off of Raymond Herrera’s drumkit. Secondly, what is so technical about playing the same riff over and over? *Chug**Chug**Chug* *pause* *Chug**Chug**Chug* *pause* *Chug**Chug**Chug* The only thing that changes things up is the occasional weedily-weedily-weedily guitar work over top of the chugging. Finally, the vocals don’t even flow with the music. It sounds like Sylvain Houde having a barking contest with a dog.
I know you’re probably about to tell me that "weedily" isn’t a proper musical term, but this, my friends, is not music. To be fair, each element on it’s own is tolerable, but combined it sounds like a poorly maintained car backfiring while someone shouts at it for being such a piece of shit. Granted, there are people who love this and will call me a fucking idiot, claiming I’m just some goon who only likes brutal death metal or goregrind, but the truth of the matter is, I just like heavy, aggressive music, whether it’s stupidly simple or insanely complex, the thing that matters most is that it’s enjoyable to listen to and done well. If you want to listen to some insane technical shredding, pick up a Death, Necrophagist or Monstrosity release that’s both heavy, aggressive, technical yet listenable. Mechanics Of Dysfunction is just noise for the sake of noise, and I say that being an avid Gigantic Brain and Catasexual Urge Motivation fan.

wow finally someone who is ready to dismiss the hype around this band . Ive seriously never understood all the fuss behind this band .
good review. I agree with the first comment. You might as well listen to PsyOpus or Behold… The Arctopus for that matter. at least Sleep Terror’s randomness is sometimes really cool
