By the time you read this review, Brain Drill will more than likely be no more. Well, not really "no more" but on a definite hiatus. The good ‘ole weed drama bomb hit the band and 3/5 of the band "left." What does this mean? I have absolutely no idea, and I’m not going to bother skimming through the miles of retarded comments and idiocy from Brain Drill’s fan base on their MySpace’s relevant blog. And yes, their MySpace fans are some serious fucking losers. Seriously, throw a stone at random in their direction and you’re guaranteed to hit someone who works at McDonald’s and knocked up his own sister.
Which is a damn shame (the drama behind the band, not the fan base), because Brain Drill are probably one of the best acts Metal Blade has going for them right now. That’s not saying much when it comes to Metal Blade, but Brain Drill indeed had a promising future ahead of them.
Brain Drill play technical death metal that can only be described as a gay, lubed up ass-raping, three-way orgy between Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas-era Origin, Beneath the Massacre (minus the early deathcore influences of their EP), and Anomalous (without its synths and proggier moments). But unlike Origin, Brain Drill can write some damn catchy and interesting technical riffs. And unlike Beneath the Massacre, Brain Drill can write more traditionally structured songs.
And these are some seriously awesome fucking riffs. The technical ability by which Brain Drill play on Apocalyptic Feasting is making my fingers vicariously bleed as I type this, and Brain Drill actually have songs that don’t run into each other like random retards. Steve Rathjen’s vocals performance is brutal and varied, knowing when to switch to high pitched screams, and his lower end growls are surprisingly coherent despite their very brutal quality. And Lord Marco’s drumming is insanely fast and punishing (though it suffers from an overly mechanical sound).
Apocalyptic Feasting isn’t without its share of problems, though. A considerable portion of this album is retread from Brain Drill’s "demo" clear EP The Parasites. Obviously, it’s to be expected that they’d re-record their demo material eventually in some form or another, but when you release said "demo" as a commercial EP and afterwards have it make up literally half of your full length as well, then you’re pushing it. And don’t weasel your way out of it by saying it’s for the better production, because that’s Apocalyptic Feasting’s second problem. The mix is too fucking high. While I love my metal loud, there’s other stuff going on in this album that is being drowned out half the time. Obviously the production isn’t too horrible (I won’t complain too much; they could have had Punchy "CAPTAIN SHIT COCK" Gonzales do it. I’m experiencing that problem with the second half of Dark Faith’s latest release), but this ain’t exactly great, either.
Regardless, with Apocalyptic Feasting Brain Drill crafted the exact album for people who wanted to get into Origin and Beneath the Massacre but were burned by their past releases. Unfortunately, Brain Drill has seemed to have ceased to be… for now. Maybe Dylan Ruskin can fill out the 3/5 missing from his band with the 3/5 of Odious Mortem that now make-up 3/5 of Decrepit Birth; fuck, KC Howard is already turning out to be the next hired gun in death metal drumming with his time between Odious Mortem, Decrepit Birth, and Element. Let’s pray that if there is a second coming of Brain Drill, they shut down the comments on their MySpace blog. *Cringe*
