A few years ago when I was looking for some new goregrind I asked Razorback madman Billy "Call Me Spanky" Nocera to recommend me something "new, gory, sloppy and crazy." Without any hesitation he immediately recommended the Brutality Reigns Supreme / Gruesome Stuff Relish Brothers In Gore split CD. 4 years later, I’m still not disappointed in that purchase.
The first 16 tracks come from Dutch goregrinders Brutality Reigns Supreme who spew forth some sloppiest, most disgusting, demented and raw brutal grinding death I’ve had the fortune of coming across. The songs are super short, fast and furious with a very simplistic song structure with crushing riffs, pitch shifted vocals with programmed drums blasting in the background. The riffing style is somewhat reminiscent of Blood with an overall sound that’s similar to Last Days Of Humanity mixed with Neuro-Visceral Exhumation, Mortician and a slight hint of Carcass-worship.
The highlight of Brutality Reigns Supreme‘s half of the split is actually the opening track, "I’m Not Insane" which is easily the catchiest goregrind track ever recorded. The minute I toss the CD in my stereo I find myself gurgling "I AM NOT INSANE!" repeatedly for the length of the track, which often leads me to question the healthiness of my own sanity. Also included is a killer cover of Impetigo‘s "Boneyard", which, surprisingly, never made it on Razorback’s tribute, even though it was far better than Murder Corporation‘s cover and far more appropriate. In other words, this is some great shit!
The second half of the split is handled by former Spanish gorelords Gruesome Stuff Relish, probably best known for their debut full length Teenage Giallo Grind released on Razorback Records and their split with Engorged.
Musically this is about as close to Carcass‘ Reek Of Putrefaction a band can get without sounding like an exact clone. The guitar tones, production, vocal effects and clean shrieks sound very late 80s Carcass. The song structure is rather simplistic and is very grind-thrashy, rather than technical, and has a very heavy and violent approach. The guitar tone is heavier than Don Decker’s left asscheek and twice as dark and evil.
The songs are generally extremely chaotic, reminiscent of mid-late 80s grind acts, with a very dark goregrind vibe. Of all of the Carcass-inspired acts clogging up the arteries of the underground today, Gruesome Stuff Relish are definitely at the top and it’s easy to understand why Billy signed these guys.
The packaging on this album is very slick with a cool horror movie poster-look and fits the overall theme displayed in the music perfectly. Overall, this is one of the only "must own" goregrind splits and, best of all, it’s available on CD. If you’re a goregrind fanatic and don’t own this, you need to cut your own arm off in shame, you fucking poseur. Great stuff! Many thanks to Spanky Nocera for the recommendation!
