Uh, quite the maniacal black metal release in a constructed, dictionary definition sense vs. a real feeling of chaos and disorderly tendencies. Diabolical and sinister, straightforward well-put-together package with aggressive vocals, atmosphere via keyboards, blah blah blah… all the pieces in the formula are present, save that "feeling". While it’s nice to see Nagash and Astennu can still create some "black metal" in their spare time, I’m pressed to say it ends up sounding like a more simplistic, aggressive version of Dimmu Borgir (I’ve even heard a rumor that this material is actually Astennu’s old band Lord Kaos). Some thrashy riffing however the drum machine is lackluster, why is it hard to find a human drummer to do some blasting and double bass? Guitar work is commendable, Astennu adds some clean, melodic leads that express talent without the overt wankery, though it’s essentially polishing a turd. Note that this isn’t the brand new Carpe Tenebrum about to be released (entitled The Mirror), this came out in ‘99 and I’m just now catching up with my promos because I’m a moron. From what I’ve read, the new album is supposed to be more death metal-ish like Altars Of Madness. Please. If Mirrored Hate Painting is any sort of indication, then I’m forced to assume they’re saying this with hope that their "fans" haven’t actually heard Alters Of Madness, they only know it’s a supposed to be a "good sign". Oh well, enough of this…I’m going to go listen to Trelldom.
