Originally released in 1996 on Deliria Productions, Japan’s Catasexual Urge Motivation’s (who have since changed their band name to Vampiric Motives) debut CD The Encyclopedia Of Serial Murders has been re-released worldwide on Razorback Records. I had originally heard of this band when the CD was first released as the band had contacted me numerous times to review the album. I had listened to a sample from their website and decided I didn’t want to review the material as I found it to be rather lame, and told them not to bother sending a copy. Four years later, Billy Nocera insisted I listen to, and review, the CD, and, honestly, how can I turn down a man with such a masculine moustache?

Upon tossing the CD into the stereo I was thrown back by the insanity of this release. You only need to get about 30 seconds into the opening track "Mutilation, Rape And Serial Murder As Modern Metaphor" before you get the urge to grab a baseball bat and beat your neighbor’s face in then taking a shit in the gaping wound where his forehead used to be. The music is pure skull splitting gore/grind with an eerie computerized drum machine, thick chugging guitars and bass with a dual vocal assault that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. The music is well structured, intense and inhumanly insane. The atmosphere is truly chilling, making you feel as though you are trapped in a horror flick being chased around by an insane zombie leper with a knife screaming about how he wants to eat your brains. Don’t fear, however, for you are the hero in this adventure, and will find an axe and chop that zombie’s evil fucking head off. As you stand in triumph over the steaming festering slop that was once your pursuer, the next song begins and new creatures appear leaving you screaming in terror as you seek a way to escape this torturous nightmare.

The Encyclopedia Of Serial Murders contains twenty-two tracks of disease ridden sickening horror. The blood vomiting gurgling lows and mid-range snarls of the vocals alone will make you shit yourself. Not me, however, music like this just makes me want to smash someone’s face in and molest their corpse. Well, hey, everyone needs a hobby, not only that, but everyone into gore-grind NEEDs to get this CD. Killing your neighbor should merely be an afterthought, however. I now kick my own ass for not having agreed to review this CD four years ago, don’t let the same happen to you. Buy this CD while you can, you never know when it may go back out of print.
