I originally heard this band a few years ago when they were using the moniker Morbid Atrophy. The music was poorly recorded, overly simplistic and rather tame. The band has improved greatly in this time, however, still have a long way to go to impress me. My main quarrel with the band is their use of the double vocals. Many great bands use a double vocal death metal assault and do it well, Cephalectomy, on the other hand, have both singers singing different lyrics at the same time. Mix that with the poorly tuned guitars and drums and what you end up with is one giant mess. Cephalectomy remind me of a grungier sounding Insatanity, unfortunately it doesn’t come off very smoothly. While listening to a track such as "Sanctum To The Ungods", you get the impression that the band is trying to play much faster than they’re actually able to, it just seems throughout the entire song the band is trying to reach a rhythm they simply are incapable of attaining. Dark Waters Rise isn’t all bad, the music to "Shroud Of Mysticism" and "Over Mountains Of Ancient Power" is quite catchy, however the poor vocals really throws the entire demo off. It’s an excellent effort from a band in an area with no metal scene of any sort, but certainly not a band which deserves to be signed any time soon.
