Has anybody heard Exit-13 before? I’m sure some of you might have heard of the Psycho-rock-grindcore act from PA. Well, for those who haven’t heard of Exit-13, that’s how Colorado’s Cephalic Carnage sound like without the whacked out psycho-rock element; which means lots of utter chaotic grind while lacking the structure to make this band (and the songs) stand out more. Though the rap sample (???) for the intro of "Anechoic Chamber" along with samples found in "Analytical", and "Regalos de Mota" differentiate one song from another, the annoyance factor of the songs themselves are at a very high level. "Extreme of Paranoia" is slightly different from the earlier songs by using an acoustical introduction which later turns into the same annoying factor in a more "moshable manner". As you can see, I’ve mentioned the word ‘annoy-’ numerous times. How annoying is this band you may ask? I barely managed to listen to "Analytical" before my brains exploded into the computer but I’m forcing myself to listen to the whole CD and review it for your reading enjoyment. The riffs alone are so pointless by using harmonics redundantly and tons of unmemorable riffs while adding rap-like samples (and even more whacked out samples that I can’t even describe in words) in the between. What’s even more annoying is the excessive use of the low grunts and high screech trade-off patterns, which has been used by Dying Fetus who also apparently stole the same techniques from the grind gods, Carcass. "100% Pure Hydro Grind" is the best way the band described themselves (as mentioned on the CD); I assume the best way to appreciate this release is if you’re stoned beyond belief from Hydro-Chronic (or mentally deprived), which I’m apparently not. It’s bands like these which make me lose hope in the attempt of fusing grind and brutal death metal together. Written By: Reggie
