Lasse Pyykkö is on fire right now. First of all, he was one of the members responsible for the legendary Finnish act Phlegethon. Next, he’s practically branded himself as one of metal’s best contributors and strongest work horses by being involved in- and subsequently releasing- a fuckton of Razorback Records projects including Hooded Menace, Vacant Coffin, Acid Witch, and two upcoming acts: Shrouded and Twist Ending. And everything he’s worked on so far has had a Midas Touch phenomena in that it’s all ranged from extremely well-crafted to excellent metal.

Of course, nothing lasts forever and even the best stumble.

BUT NOT YET MOTHERFUCKERS!!! LASSE IS GONNA MAKE YOU HIS BITCH!!!!

That last sentence is pretty much Claws in a nutshell. Eschewing the death/doom and early Earache worship of Lasse’s past 3 Razorback offerings, Claws is a completely one-man project dedicated to the forgotten sounds of Sweden’s Crematory and Finland’s Abhorrence. Now, there’s only 2 reactions to that:

1) “Who are those guys?” – GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HOUSE AND GO DEMO DIGGING ASSHOLE!

2) “Whoa. That… is… fucking… AWESOME!” – I love you. Will you let me lick you? Please let me lick you.

Yeah, needless to say the prospect of an album that captures those 2 bands’ essences is pretty much a dream project. And Absorbed in the Nethervoid more or less captures this dark, dirty, and dreary essence. It possesses both bands’ murky, extreme riffing and sense of melody with a bit of Abhorrence‘s atmosphere. And while it’s a considerably cleaner production, Absorbed in the Nethervoid can still recreate the sense of dark brutality and foreboding dread that was present in both bands’ demo offerings and it still has that thick, fuzzy production sound that death metal enthusiasts have come to know and love.

What’s even more impressive is that everything on here was entirely handled by Lasse: bass, guitars, drums, and vocals. Granted, one-man bands aren’t at all unheard of and quite many put out excellent releases, but Claws has a feeling of authenticity that’s not usually present on these one-man offerings. It captures everything morbid, heavy, and bleak about Scandinavian death metal’s most elite acts, and does it with a flair that would make you think it was created by a full 4-piece sitting inside some decrepit studio in 1993.

This isn’t to say that Claws isn’t without some of Lasse’s trademark techniques. The vocal approach hasn’t changed much from his other Razorback projects and some of Lasse’s guitar melodies have a distinctive Hooded Menace ring here or there, but this gives Absorbed in the Nethervoid a welcome feeling of familiarity for fans of Lasse’s past bands who are just breaking into the record.

Absorbed in the Nethervoid is easily my most anticipated Razorback Record of 2009, and I’m not disappointed. Claws delivers a much needed revival of a classic Scandinavian style, and delivers a truly mandatory death metal album. Grab this fucker.

Oh, and if Crematory made you think “German” please take a set of dull razors and proceed to de-glove the skin of your penis. There is only one true Crematory, and it ain’t German.

Mandatory! A Must Own Release!

Yay Pyykkö! I’ve been looking forward to this album since I first heard about Claws a load of months ago. This, and the split 7″ Claws has with some other band. The album cover is also one of my favourite Razorback pictures. I just need to get some money together…

…there’s a German band called Crematory as well? Hm.

Once again Necro Tron you proved that you can’t review an album. This review is nonsense. “It still has that thick, fuzzy production sound that death metal enthusiasts have come to know and love” – What makes you think death metal enthusiasts love a thick and fuzzy production, sure a good production is always a plus, but when the music sucks then the production matters jack shit. “What’s even more impressive is that everything on here was entirely handled by Lasse: bass, guitars, drums, and vocals.” – No it is not impressive, this one man band sounds too poor with only one man trying to compensate for his lack of knowledge on every single instrument, he plays every instrument with extreme mediocrity, and it sounds like a 10 year old beating the shit out of the instruments with laughable simplicity and uninspiring and unoriginal composition. Couldn’t you have taken your time to critically analyze this music, compare it to death metal standards and then justify why it is so essential for a death metal listeners? Sure you make some comparisons to two bands, but your mouth stays wrapped around Lasse’s dick for too long, and it isn’t even funny. The major problem even starts with your comparison with Crematory (An utter shit band) and Abhorrence (a good band who faded amongst the giants of their era). And even here you commit the monumental error of awarding Lasse for copying these two bands, giving out an essential stamp to a guy who you clearly can see is copying the sound of these two bands!? Fucking atrocious is what it is… News flash Necro Tron; you don’t award people for copying others!? This is close to a worthwhile release, but it never gets even near to “essential”, a rating you have been handing out far too often.

Whether or not you like the material reviewed, Necro-Tron’s review is more interesting and funny than the silly, disjointed and self-satisfied rant that you posted.

Razorback gets WAY too much love around here. 3 or 4 guys releasing slightly varied material under several monikers isn’t really all that exciting. Decent music but the whole horror movie vibe thing is getting old.

Haha, that’s clever. However, I don’t know if mixing Abhorrence’s and Swedeatory’s blends of old raw death metal with pop culture references, MySpace scene cred and indie trance pop would work…

Razorback gets too much love here but I mean, shit its earned, I don’t think this is a bad album, in fact its pretty fucking good. I mean, it could have easily been a Revolting CD, it would be more badass if this Lasse guy just stuck with one band name and put out three releases in one year with different styles. There are some supreme moments here, I wish there was more phaser effect on the bass, there are some parts on here that sound very sinister in a melting down a sewer gutter type of way. Now thats probably a retarded way of describing music, but if you listen to death metal you are retarded in one form or another, 98% of the rest of the world would agree.

I hate to be in the ITS ON RAZORBACK SO ITS GOOD BEFORE I HEAR IT crowd, well fuck it, I don’t mind, but its really not the case, they just put out good shit and people who think so genuinely feel that it is good.

Razorback is a trendy label for hipsters and faggots. Billy Nocera hates most metal fans and doesn’t take the genre seriously.

Would you like to explain why you think Razorback is a trendy label, and why you think Nocera doesn’t take metal seriously?

You have better give us a rational and well thought out explanation, and not just hateful anti-Nocera propaganda.

That’s hipster talk. Metal is NOT stupid and it should be taken very seriously. It’s a way of life for some of us so fuck you and your hipster website!

Razorback’s roaster is made up of novelty bands and throw away retro clones. Usually based on what’s “in.” Sure, there are a few exceptions during these periods but still, keep in mind that RR was predominantly a Goregrind/Gore Metal label at the beginning of the decade. Moving on to Thrash tinged bands, and now it’s all about early 90′s DM rehash. Billy says he hates goregrind and retro thrash now. He’ll say the same thing about this new wave of retro death metal in a few years. He doesn’t take metal seriously and he treats a lot of death metal fans with disrespect. Billy Nocera is a shit talker, a back stabber, and a virus in the metal scene and it’s about time someone called him out on it. He started rumors and bullshit lies about Kam Lee which should show how little he respects Death Metal if he’s pulling this crap on a pioneer.

Err… no, I don’t believe you. You can’t even be bothered to provide proof that what Nocera is doing with Razorback is bad for the metal scene as a whole. When exactly did Nocera start spreading rumours about Kam Lee, and when and where did he ever say that he hates goregrind? Not to mention the fact that no Razorback bands are “in” with the scenester crowd. And how is Teufel’s Tomb a hipster website?

I think “retard” sums you up quite nicely, and I know quite a bit about the fine art of being a retard. Are you affiliated with Boa Constrictus in any way? Because you both seem to be fans of URLs that lead nowhere.

Wow, I remember downloading this album and thiking, “Is the album supposed to sound this fuzzy?” Whether it was intended or not, it really is annoying. And what makes it worse is how damn slow it is. It almost sounds like this guy is going for a doom metal sound and failing miserably at it.
