Crushing old school darkened death doom metal. This is the only description I can think of to accurately describe the music of Japan’s Coffins. Every riff is a crushing sonic boom of depravity. Imagine legendary old school metal acts Hellhammer and early Celtic Frost fused with Winter and Autopsy, with a sickeningly heavy bass tone that makes Melvins sound like pop, engulfed an atmosphere of sheer despair and impending doom and you may be able to comprehend the aural decimation that is Coffins.

There are no awe-inspiring solos. There are no blast beats. There are no slamming pit riffs. This is old school death metal played the way it was meant to be played! The material on The Other Side Of Blasphemy is raw, aggressive, punishing, simplistic and, most importantly, fucking good. The average length of the 7 tracks is just shy of 6 minutes, but each song seems to go on infinitely longer. The pace of the material is so mind-numbingly slow that you just get completely lost in the music and lose track of time.

Just when it seems like the material can’t possibly get any slower, heavier or more depressing, the pace suddenly quickens to mid-tempo old school death metal. Every song sounds like a slower and heavier version of every doom-styled track Incantation has ever written.

If you were a fan of Mortuary In Darkness full length that came out on Razorback Records, or the Sacrifice To Evil Spirit EP that came out on Living Dead Society you will love The Other Side Of Blasphemy. Incredibly, it’s even heavier and more crushing than the band’s previous efforts! This is a must-own release for all fans of crippling old school death doom metal, especially fans of Hellhammer and Winter. Awesome stuff! Written By: Teufel
