Considering these guys are fellow Canadians I should probably be more lenient with this band, perhaps kinder and gentler in my review of their demo. However, when something sucks, it just sucks, regardless of which side of the border it happens to be on, so, like with every other band, I shall not show them any mercy. First of all, let it be known, for the record, that I think Deämon is a stupid band name. Just call yourselves Demon or think of something at least slightly original and leave the stupid A out of it. Anyway… before I get into the review of the CD, I need to go through a few things in their press kit which are irritating the hell out of me. First of all they refer to themselves as "Ottawa’s leading Death Metal group". What they fail to mention is that they are Ottawa’s ONLY death metal group. They also mention quotes from various webzines reviewing their CD, which means absolutely nothing considering almost all webzines give good reviews to basically everything they receive since they want to get more free shit, regardless of who it’s from. The funniest part is the final page which contains a printout from mp3.com showing that their band has been listed as the number 1 download on the death metal chart twice, which doesn’t mean a damn thing considering how few downloads were being processed in the death metal section at that time and who their competition was, as well as at that time mp3.com weren’t filtering downloads as much as they do today. Hell, even a band from Australia, who will go unnamed, reached #1 and remained there for months before people at the website realized the band been downloading their own songs 2000 times a day, but enough about that, let’s move on to the actual music. The music reminds me a lot of their press kit; stupid. I’m thankful they at least didn’t refer to themselves as original, otherwise I’d have to drive down to Ottawa and slap them each upside the head, as they very obviously rip off Cannibal Corpse on their opening track "End Of Ages", Slayer on "Bleeding Thoughts" and Pantera on "Inheritance", just to name a few. Actually there are several Death, Cannibal Corpse and Slayer thefts on every track, which even the most unknowledgeable of fans will easily find. The riffing sounds really thick and chuggy, a trick most bands with weak guitar playing skill use to hide their poor abilities, although they do a decent job with the solos, then again it’s not too hard to copy what someone else has already done, especially if you can look it up in a music sheet a thousand times. I’d be much more impressed if they actually thought up anything original of their own. The drumming is decent, although about as varied and original as the rest of the music supporting it. Listening to this album is more painful than watching a fat woman ride a stationary bike. This is just another in a long line of clone acts plaguing the underground. If you’ve never listened to a death metal band before then Deämon will probably the greatest thing you’ve ever heard, however if you’ve been into the music for a few years, you’ll realize just how lame these guys are. This album irritated me so much it took me more than 18 months to review, now I wish I’d never heard it. This is so distressing, I need another beer.
