Decrepitaph
Beyond the Cursed Tombs

Genre:Old School Death MetalFormat:CDTracks:9
Label:Razorback RecordsYear:2010

It’s time for a Razorback Records review, kids, you know what that means, don’t you? Death. Fucking. METAL! Texas based old school duo Decrepitaph consist of former Eternal Suffering vocalist, current Beyond Hell, Black Pentagram Cult, Encoffination, Father Befouled, Festered, Loathsome, Scaremaker, Skincrawler, Tombstones and Wooden Stake member Wayne “Elektrokutioner” Sarantopoulos on bass and drums, while Sinworm, Loathsome and Xaadolf‘s David “Sinworm” Clark handles guitars and vocals.

This gruesome twosome play a brand of down-tuned, thunderous, booming old school death metal that combines the dark evil sound of Incantation‘s Onward to Golgatha, with the heaviness of Asphyx‘s The Rack, the catchy riffs of Autopsy‘s Severed Survival, with two fingers of Bolt Thrower‘s In Battle There is No Law splashed in for good measure. Needless to say, Decrepitaph‘s sophomore full length, Beyond the Cursed Tombs, is one heavy, and dark slab of death metal that’ll make you pump your fist, bang your head and growl at the moon.

The songwriting on Beyond the Cursed Tombs is hit and miss, some tracks are pure killer, and others are watered down filler. The skill level of both members isn’t particularly noteworthy; the riffing is sometimes a little sloppy, and the drumming is solid, but not outstanding. Despite their limitations, Wayne and David have created a release that’s as infectious as tuberculosis.

With a guitar tone thicker, and meatier, than Steven Segal’s back-tits, drumming as punishingly slow as an evening at a poetry slam, and vocals as haunting as a trip to a YMCA gym change room, Decrepitaph have unleashed a horror-fueled slab of old school death metal release, worthy of being released on Razorback Records. They won’t blow you away with an original display of technical wizardry, but they will beat your head in with a tire iron and skullfuck the wound.

If you’re a fan of the traditional old school dark, and heavy Razorback Records sound, you should absolutely pick up Decrepitaph‘s Beyond the Cursed Tombs. Every time I feel like I’ve heard enough and I’m ready to walk away from good, it calls out to me and draws me back in for another listen, and it’s been doing this regularly for the past year. It’s certainly no classic, but is definitely worth a listen, or ten.

A Solid Effort! Worth A Listen!

hit and miss for sure. i guess that happens when you’ve written a thousand songs in 20 different bands though. socrates once said “a dude only has so many riffs in his brain, i hate my wife”

I’m pretty sure he also said “I am King Shit of Fuck Mountain… Why would you FUCK with me?” Seems like something he’d say anyway…

These guys make old death metal feel like jazz fusion. Waste of disc space.
