Profane Doctrines Unburied

Genre:Death MetalFormat:CDTracks:10
Label:Razorback RecordsYear:2011

Decrepitaph come to us from Texas and play a grizzly style of death metal with all the classic hallmarks we come to expect from a band that carries the banner of horror themed music. Like a dusty crypt ridden with the stench of old corpses, Profane Doctrines Unburied, their third full length, is a foul slab of nasty death metal.

The riffs are immensely heavy, reminiscent of early Bolt Thrower, a clue to the old school nature of this affair. The vocals, a bellowing growl with enough reverb to scare John McEntee away, are delivered with a masterful performance by Sinworm, who is no doubt a giant bulbous creature with seven mouths and no eyes or limbs to speak of. The tempo of the riffs varies from slow churning to mid-paced grinding with the occasional groovy stomp. And then you have the melody. Yes, melody abound! And of the cheesiest sort no less. To contrast the guttural atmosphere Decrepitaph sneak in a keyboard leaden melody  that at times sounds like it came out of a seventies Italian Giallo flick.

While almost novel in its delivery, the melodies are actually a welcome addition to what would otherwise be pretty standard death metal. In truth Decrepitaph are a fairly run of the mill Incantation worship band with several tweaks. The riffs are indeed suffocating in their heaviness and the overall atmosphere is dark and sinister. But all in all there is little to distinguish Decrepitaph from the hordes of old school death metal revival bands that have been coming up on Razorback, Dark Descent and Profound Lore. The inclusion of bizarre and creepy sometimes up beat melodies really makes Decrpitaph into something special. The song writing is excellent with most songs coming up as highlights.

For the most part Profane Doctrines Unburied is an enjoyable listen with some extremely catchy parts mixed with a minimal amount of filler. If you are a fan of any of the bands on Dark Descent or Razorback this is a no brainer.
