Every time I write a review that people disagree with, I always get some fucking retard who responds to me with a stupid comment like “You’re just a brutal death metal fan, you don’t know shit about this music, faggot!” This always makes me laugh hysterically because, contrary to popular belief, I’m not a fan of brutal death metal. I’ve been to enough brutal death metal festivals to know if I attended one more I’d put my fucking head through a window.
The overwhelming majority of brutal death metal bands are talentless fucking retards who would do the underground a huge service if they just lay their instruments out end to end and drove a steamroller over them and abandoned their goal to be the slammin-est, brutal-est band in Estonia. Finding a single brutal death metal album I like is like finding a gold nugget lodged in a turd in the toilet. A Devourment album is like finding a 20 pound gold brick encrusted with diamonds, rubies and emeralds in my poop. You don’t ask how it got there, you just roll up your sleeve, fish it out and make a fortune selling it on eBay two years later.
The latest full length offering by these Texas brutes is titled Unleash The Carnivore and is the follow-up to the somewhat disappointing Butcher The Weak. Devourment burst onto the scene with the relentless, uncompromising brutality of their 1998 debut, Molesting The Decapitated, an album so vicious and visceral it became an instant favorite of mine and is an album I still listen to regularly to this day. It was a perfect blend of simplistic songwriting, great execution and a vocal delivery style that countless bands have emulated since. Where Butcher The Weak failed to top the debut was in the song writing department. The songs were decent, but far too many songs just sounded like material from Molesting The Decapitated rearranged and re-recorded, it just lacked it’s own identity.
Unleash The Carnivore sees Devourment abandoning this strategy and returning to their roots of writing simple catchy riffs, adding some sick blasts and glazing it with lung butter. From the opening blasts of “Unleash The Carnivore” to the final gurgle of “Field Of The Impaled”, Unleash The Carnivore is a relentless bulldozing slab of axe-swinging, skull-crushing, head banging brutality in every sense of the word.
Devourment have a simple goal; to put your teeth on the curb and stomp on your head. Mission accomplished. While listening to Unleash The Carnivore for the first time I did what I only seem to do when listening to the most mindlessly stupid brutal death metal; I started growling along to the music into my fist. Normally this is a stupidly guilty pleasure I can enjoy without fear of looking like a meth crazed lunatic, but on this particular occasion my girlfriend walked in on me, fist clenched, hunched over, gurgling into my hand and asked me what the hell I was doing. Telling her I was incapable of listening to the music without grunting along into my fist seemed like a stupid response so I went with the less embarrassing response of “I’m masturbating.” She gave me a disgusted look, sighed told me I was disgusting and walked away and I was once again safe to resume gurgling into my knuckles in peace for another 20 minutes.
Far too many people hate Devourment for stupid reasons. They claim the music is stupid, it’s just a bunch of blasting and gurgling. They seem to not realize that that’s the entire fucking point. These guys aren’t starting a death metal Mensa group! Brutal death metal is a purely primal release, just a group of guys in a recording studio being Neanderthals, grunting, thumping their chests and destroying their instruments. It’s not about who can write the most technical riff, or who can write a gentle melody, it’s all about trying to make the listener want to put their fist through something while listening to it.
The song writing, song structure and musicianship on Unleash The Carnivore surpasses that of Molesting The Decapitated in every regard. If you listen to the two albums back to back you almost end up looking at Molesting The Decapitated like it’s Unleash The Carnivore‘s retarded cousin. Unleash The Carnivore is faster, heavier, with a darker and more violent atmosphere, with a much better production and even sicker vocals!
Former bassist, now vocalist, Mike Majewski sent me a copy of the digipak to review, and I’ve gotta say, this is one of the nicest packaging I’ve seen on a death metal release in ages. The creature on the cover, by legendary death metal artist Dan Seagrave, is like a modern version of the creature from the cover of Suffocation‘s Effigy Of The Forgotten. It looks cool when you look at a picture online, but until you have it in your hands and see it up close, checking out all of the detail, it’s really amazing. I’m hoping Brutal Bands makes a full sized poster of it just so I could stare at it for hours, it’s that fucking cool. The background behind the creature and the artwork in the huge 18-page poster fold booklet, are handled by Par Olofsson who has done insane artwork for The Faceless, Abysmal Dawn, Prostitute Disfigurement, Severed Savior and Deeds Of Flesh. 9 full panels of the backside are used for a big poster print of a giant standing in a scene that wouldn’t be out of place on an Obituary cover. If that wasn’t enough, Mike Majewski, who is no slouch when it comes to gory metal designs himself, came up with a cool black and white circular creature of his own for the CD cover. A lot of time and effort was put into this effort, inside and out, and it shows.
Top to bottom, front to back Devourment‘s Unleash The Carnivore is a brutal death metal fan’s wet dream come true. It’s ridiculously heavy, brutal as fuck and completely and utterly retarded. If you’re looking for an album that will challenge you mentally, keep looking, however, if you’re mentally challenged, this is the album for you. The only downside to Unleash The Carnivore is I know for every brutal death metal album this entertaining there’s 2,000 that completely fucking suck and are totally worthless pieces of shit. The quota for awesome brutal death metal has been met, which now means I’ve got 1,999 shitty albums to go through until I find the next golden turd.

Teufel just when I thought you had learned your lesson you go and give this album an “essential” stamp, are you fucking kidding me!? The vocals sound like a stupid pig vomiting all over the mic. The musicianship is mediocre at best, and far from being tight, and the songwriting here is repetitive and uninspiring. Again, what the fuck were you thinking, man?? I’m starting to believe that you get paid under the counter to give these shitbands a good rating, or even blackmailed for that matter. This album is as far from being essential as a wrap-on dildo is for heterosexual couples. This album is close to “worthwhile”, not freaking essential! One thing I do agree with you here, is the fact that this album IS utterly retarded.
hahahahaha… for brutal death metal, it is an essential listen. People who hate brutal death metal and/or Devourment already know to avoid it.
‘the fucksa wrap-on dildo?
Sounds like a strap-on dildo covered in bubble wrap.
Exactly…. Still brutal death metal fan or not, this is far from being quality brutal death, bands such as Deeds of Flesh, Iniquity, Suffocation (just to name a few), hell even Nile put these guys to shame! If the vocals did not sound like a fat pig getting its dick sucked by its master (a stupid inbred farmer fuck), then I would have tolerated this more.
I listen to heaps of goregrind, so when it comes to really really brutal music, I don’t care too much about production, technical ability or any of that, just make it loud and catchy, that’s it.
But if you put aside technical ability, and original songwriting then you basically say to yourself “anything goes” as long as it is loud and catchy, resulting in the loss of finesse IMHO. I think music should be judged by its innovation and unique sound, when something gets recycled like 90% of metal music, then it simply loses its quality. Still I understand that you need to adapt to these various types of subgenres to be able to assess the reviews. For me all that goregrind, porngrind etc is an abomination and complete disgrace to its humble death metal roots. If I were to review metal music in particular I would reward artists who dare to innovate and build upon the foundations which have been laid by many great innovators in the genre, and discard “artists” who can’t contribute with anything new and exciting. When you think about it, porngrind, goregrind are all subgenre of pure desperation. They are just filler genres to death metal in many ways, because there is really (for the majority of bands) not much new to be said in death metal, thus the creation of subgenres who rely heavily on death metal traits but implement weak themes such as extreme gore (goregrind) and vile sexuality (porngrind). Death metal used to be a genre of the elite, old Morbid Angel post FFTTF, Gorguts, Death, Immolation, Obituary, Cryptopsy, Cannibal Corpse, Atheist (just to name a few), all these bands had their unique sound and feel, but this has disappeared in modern death metal music, you can’t tell one band from the other, it is a fucking mess IMHO! It might just be that I am a hardheaded pedantic asshole, but I like to be critical and I have huge respect for death metal’s legacy, so this genre means a lot to me, and I hate it when mediocre attempts to emulate the greats pretty much dominate the modern death metal scene and any other metal scene in general.
I meant everything pre Formulas Fatal To The Flesh, hence “old Morbid Angel”. :/
You’ve made your point, you don’t like it. Your opinion has absolutely no bearing on my opinion, so there’s no point arguing over it. I like it. Review stands. End of discussion.
I bet you’re the life of the party.
Bwahah! I am sociopath…. I haven’t left my basement for quite some time now… But every now and then I mingle with society just to snatch and brutally rape sorority girls, before smashing their skulls with a hammer.
hahaha.. nice review…
I prefer bring me the horizon lol

I laughed pretty hard at this. I also can’t believe I didn’t know this album was in the works… seriously, a new Devourment album WITH Dan Seagrave art? Fuckin’ rad.
yeah, Devourment must be millionaires now.. maybe it was funded by the NYDM – Texas chapter..
Really one hell of an album in Brutal Death Metal genre which is unfortunately plagued with mediocrity and unoriginality now. But I don’t agree with the reviewer that this release is better than Molesting The Decapitated. Even after so many years MTD is still highly-regarded and most sought after album. May be you haven’t listen to it for a long time and you need to listen to it again. The only department in which Unleash The Carnivore beats Molesting The Decapitated is better production and killer packaging.
Hey Teufel, what inspires you to write such reviews? is it the sucking of all those dicks you suck on a daily basis?
uhh, Devourment, essential??? all this shit sounds like the same retarded br00tal nonsense, I’m trying to understand how you can love one brutal band and hate everything else when everything else and Devourment are pretty much identical, it’s a very monotonous genre
This coming from the guy who writes shitty noise albums.
I find this too funny:
“Far too many people hate Devourment for stupid reasons. They claim the music is stupid, it’s just a bunch of blasting and gurgling. They seem to not realize that that’s the entire fucking point. ”
from the BDH review:
“Unfortunately, it seems he’s more focused on acting like a retard and making noise for the sake of making noise, rather than creating anything even remotely resembling music.”
hahah, maybe shitty noise is the “entire fucking point” too don’t you think?
You both act like retards, difference is, Devourment are actually entertaining while acting like retards. You’re just fucking annoying.
yep, that’s how much I hate people, I annoy the shit out of them, and that’s what noise is all about!
I agree Devourment is retarded, but boring instead of entertaining. How long can anyone listen to the same gurgling and blasting without falling asleep?
TXDM is the best!! I love Devourment and I am retarded.
The reason I enjoy bands like Devourment is because it is nice to be pummeled once in a while. I usually don’t listen to Brutal Death Metal, but sometimes it is nice for a change of pace. 25-30 minutes of pig squeals and grunts can fill my urges for a month. IMHO (lol) the bands recognize that they are OTT. That is why they usually break the songs up with samples etc..
I like Hacked Up For Barbeque for what it is. I realize it is brutal and stupid, but I don’t care. When I want to listen to something pushing the envelope there are 2,345,675 (Origin, Decrepit Birth, Spawn of Possession…)bands attempting to be unique or ground breaking. Sometimes it is fun to chug along like some of songs on the second half of Korn’s debut. Anyway, I’m done, now it is time to watch adult swim.
The album is good, I have all CD, and before Wayne past away, his sounds were very guttural, and very original in 1.3.8, then after that Reuben stepped in the mixed with Molesting the Decapitated, and Choking on bile is one of my favorite songs. Now Mike being vocals since Butcher the weak, the sound in that album sounded much more improve and drums and guitars sounded distorted, which to me is very good, the sounds sounded louder and more clear to listen to. Now in the release of Unleash the Carnivores, I’m a little turned off about how much less the drums are more background-ish,same goes for the guitars, seem less clear, like butcher the weak, the sounds in the album were great and the vocals were very good too, this new album sounds much more technical, but all the songs are astounding and some songs keep the misanthropic rhythm fresh. Its hands-down a great listen, the negativity ppl say about the album say its bad, because many are fond of mainstream DM. The vocals are something many can attempt and little know how, and many just sing the same dance like Deicide and Morbid Angel, why in the world am I comparing those two bands vocals? Because they sound much similar. Not saying that their both horrible bands, this is my opinion on their vocals. DEVOURMENT is brutal bands, their all unique to their own melody, and vocals is precisely how u describe them, pig throat drenched brutality, that’s a big thumbs up in my book.
Devourment raped my unborn child! So much fun!
Molesting The Decapitated was the most brutal and the heaviest shit these guys ever recorded but after that whatever they put out so far didn’t impress me at all. Butcher The Weak was crap and so is Unleash The Carnivore.
Thanks to Teufel because after reading his review for Molesting The Decapitated i tracked down that album and that is indeed the heaviest shit ever created by man.
This shit is fucking garbage. Slammy wigger bullshit.
Album is getting better every time I listen to it.
This album is sick, it’s amazing how much they’ve progressed from the last album. Production is very slick too.
I have never seen so much bitching over one album. Seriously if you have this much time on your hands to complain about Devourment then quit being a metalhead, sell all your cds, shirts, etc. Put on a Brittney Spears cd, finger your asshole until it bleeds and move on to something else to whine about.
This was an awesome review! Well done bro! I can agree with the fact that you have to go through about 2,000 albums to find 1 that is worth keeping and listening to. I have that same problem! HaHa! I just got a copy in the mail today from Mike Majewski and I honestly couldn’t be any more satisfied with an album than Unleash The Carnivore. It’s everything the underground craves!
Great album.
Great album. The only slam band that stands out for me, thats probably because of their songwriting. Its repetitive but in a technical way, wich some people dont seem to understand. Everything I have been reading here is all about their boring vocals, repetitive riffs, and not being original. I can tell you, this is one of the bands that doesnt try too hard to be original. They just make their music as it is, just how they want it to be. And they know it fucking well. For me this is realy one of the albums I’ve been waiting for, while others can’t get me interested. But thats how it is, everyone’s got their own taste.
I’m very picky about all the metal I listen to, but I really like this album.
I don’t like metal songs, rather brutal metal ones. I wonder what I am doing on this page. I liked the way you have explained your post though.
Shut up you piece of shit
