Cranial Impalement

Genre:Brutal Death MetalFormat:CDTracks:8
Label:Extremities ProductionsYear:1999

If you’re into underground brutal death metal and have not heard of San Diego’s Disgorge, the only comment I can make is, what the fuck cave do you live in? In 1995 and 1996 Disgorge, not to be confused with the Carcass-worship Mexican group by the same name, recorded two four song demos, Demo ‘95 and Cranial Impalement respectively. Three years later, Steve Miller of Extremities Productions put these slabs of monstrous brutality onto CD for the first time, prior to the band’s signing with Unique Leader Entertainment. For those of you unfamiliar with Disgorge, their music is simply technically proficient brutal death metal with the most insanely guttural vocals ever recorded without the aid of any vocal effects. Imagine, if you will, the sound of a grown man growling into a toilet bowl, his gurgles resonating off of the porcelain with gobs of water occasionally getting caught in his mouth, which he’d release in a sickening ripple of tracheal gargling fury. Sounds brutal, doesn’t it? Well, vocalist Matti Way achieves this effect without the aid of any lavatory equipment or vocal effects. Needless to say he has set the new standard in vocal vomiting. Tracks one through four are taken from DAT direct to CD, and the production is very good, giving the music a very thick, heavy sound. The riffing will instantly remind many brutal death metal fans of Suffocation and fellow Californian’s Deeds Of Flesh, with their high paced technical chugging and excellent musicianship. Like Alex Webster in Cannibal Corpse, Eric Flesey’s bass lines are often brought to the forefront of the music to give him an opportunity to display his unique style. Mix in the solidly pummelling beats of Ricky Myers, and you’ve got some of the tightest and most brutal death metal ever recorded. Unfortunately tracks five through eight, taken from the band’s first demo, were transferred from tape, so the sound quality is rather poor in comparison, however, the music is still incredibly sick and destructive. This is an album for those of you looking for something aggressive, brutal and so incredibly sick it will make your grandmother vomit. Gargle toilet water as much as you like, but you will never be as brutal as Matti, if you don’t believe me, pick up Cranial Impalement and see for yourself.
