If someone asked me to name a death metal band that aurally personifies schizophrenia, I would immediately respond with "Disgorge". Disgorge is a very unique and ingenious band (This is a factual statement, not an opinion, so if you disagree, you are wrong. Sorry.). A band whose music almost solely revolves around unpredictability and a sort of controlled chaos must be, at the very least, respected, especially in the brutal death metal genre. She Lay Gutted is the latest release from these California brutallions, and, compared to their recently-released demo compilation, Cranial Impalement, this CD does not disappoint. Although not as bass-heavy on drums as the first, She Lay Gutted boasts an even more unpredictable ferocity that has made Disgorge a well-known name in the underground. Guitars chop forth with a nonstop barrage of chugging and ever-changing riffs and patterns that make you feel as if your flesh was slowly being cut by razor sharp bones inside your body. Drums click and pound your disfigured body before you even fall to the ground, and boiling guttural vocals mock your helpless mound of steaming tissue. O.K., so you won’t really die when you listen to this CD, but it sure makes you want to kill someone else. I challenge anyone to listen to this CD less than 50 times and predict every riff change. Bullshit-you can’t. She Lay Gutted doesn’t carry as many blatant breakdowns as Cranial Impalement does, but it will grow on you even more than the latter. Disgorge easily holds it’s fork and knife at the table of carnivorous kings of the death metal underground; yet another fact. You can disagree if you like, but don’t you hate being wrong?
