Remember the first time you listened to Rune’s The End of Nothing, and felt utterly overwhelmed by its 10 ton hammer of dreadful depression, smashing down your genitals like a jackhammer to cement? Or the first time you heard anything from Portal, with their wall of sound cacophony and eldritch ambiance?

Ever imagine what those two would probably sound like combined into one experimental mesh of hopelessness, despair, and furious grinding oppression?

Well, if you somehow were kind enough to humanity, you probably didn’t, you goody little two shoes piss-ant fuck. But for the rest of us who utterly hate humanity, there is Ehnahre.

Ehnahre is essentially what I just described: a furious meld of Rune’s atmospheric death/grind with Portal’s obtuse riffing, dooming ambiance, but without the “Incantation as played through a massive train collision” production sound. The band gathers its bizarre pedigree from members of both Kayo Dot, a band not unfamiliar to bizarre amalgams of metal, and Biolich, a band most Teufel’s Tomb readers will easily be familiar with. Their debut album The Man Closing Up twists and turns, confronts and baffles, sways and tilts in abstract ways that only a mad man could have thought. It’s disturbing and avant garde artsy at the same time, satisfying the want for violence, suicide, and a really fucked up surrealist movie all in one simultaneous sitting. You want fucking complex metal? This is fucking complex. And down right minimalist at the same time. If the Mad Hatter was a metalhead, did a fuck load of speed, and offed himself with slow water boarding while furiously masturbating to CD-Rs of the Queen of Hearts raping Alice with a strap-on, it would probably sound a lot like The Man Closing Up. I mean that as a compliment; FUCK ALICE. Bitch should know better than to follow a fucking talking bunny down a God interdimensional hole.

This? This is good fucking shit, motherfuckers. It’s just that good. Ehnahre have released an excellent debut, and it’s probably only going to get sicker. Bring it on.
