When Razorback Records first started out, I loved everything they put out, from Engorged to Machetazo to Fuck… I’m Dead and Intense Hammer Rage. Then came the debut by Ghoul, which I really didn’t get into, and after that there was a string of albums that came out that just really didn’t impress me and my interest in the label waned. It wasn’t until a month or so ago that Lord Gore guitarist SCSI got me to check out Frightmare, that my interest in Razorback Records was renewed. Frightmare is the brainchild of Lord Gore guitarist/Maniac Killer mastermind Maniac Neil. The group consists of Neil, doing a bit of everything, Gurge and the drummer from Lord Gore and both guitarists from Engorged. What they created is a hypnotic death metal style that perfectly embodies the feeling of horror flicks of the 70s and 80s, mixing elements of early Misfits, Repulsion, Impetigo, Terrorizer and, to a lesser extent, Lord Gore and Engorged. Each song is based around a horror flick, from "Friday The 13th", "Be My Bloody Valentine" and "Black Christmas", and, for the most part, the songs sound like they would fit perfectly into the soundtrack of each movie. The album is surprisingly fresh and unique sounding, even with all of the obvious influences, and the band sound incredibly tight for an outfit that was put together as a side project. Midnight Murder Mania has the perfect blend of sickeningly insane vocals, solid riffing, machinegun drumming and horror flick intros, mixed with a thick, sloppy, swampy production, to make it easily one of the easiest albums to get into and truly enjoy from beginning to end. While I was completely disappointed by Lord Gore’s The Autophagus Orgy, Frightmare’s Midnight Murder Mania more than makes up for it by delivering a solid, sloppy slab of ghoulish gore. If you have money to buy only one Razorback album, give Midnight Murder Mania some serious consideration, especially if you’re into Repulsion/Impetigo influenced death metal. Very highly recommended!!!
