For many years I was like a lot of metal purists who firmly believed that pitch shifted vocals were ridiculous and "untrve" and that drum machines were pure shit and there was no way any band with a drum machine or pitch shifted vocals could be any good. Thankfully I quickly grew out of my hatred for pitch shifted vocals once I got into goregrind, but my dislike for drum machines remained until I heard the 2001 debut by Australia’s Fuck…I’m Dead.
Fuck…I’m Dead consists of The Kill drummer Jay on vocals, bassist Tom from Arseripper, his Arseripper band mate guitarist Dave of Shallow Grave and The Day Everything Became Nothing and a drum machine. When I first found out that Fuck…I’m Dead had the drummer of The Kill, I was completely puzzled as to why he didn’t play drums on the effort and was a little put off at the prospect of listening to drum-machine backed grind. After putting the album in my stereo and pressing play for the first time any doubts I may have had were quickly blasted away.
Bring On The Dead is a 23 song full length album clocking in at 26 minutes and featured 15 new songs for the album, 6 songs from the band’s split release on No Escape Records with Sanity’s Dawn and two live tracks. The music on the effort is a rich blend of razor sharp grind with melodic passages, slightly shifted shrieking vocals and super fast blasts. The surprising thing is that the programming of the drum machine, done by guitarist Dave, suits the music perfectly whether a steady beat is required, a light speed blast or something with a bit more variety.
The material on this effort is fucking intense, with plenty of wicked riffs, insane shrieks and blasts crammed into the super short songs. While there may not seem like a lot of music on this album, it plays a lot like Assück’s Anticapital or Misery Index where you get to the end of the album in no time at all but you feel like you just had a rich, full listening experience. The great thing about the short track time on Bring On The Dead is that there’s no time for boredom. Far too many bands just let a song drag on for entirely too long, but Fuck…I’m Dead simply come over, kick you in the face, steal your beer, have sex with your girlfriend and leave you a quivering, broken man.
Of the albums Razorback Records have released in their 7 year existence Fuck…I’m Dead’s Bring On The Dead is definitely among their highest quality discs to date. After hearing the material on the band’s split with Engorged, I’m eager to finally hear a new full length effort from these Melbourne-based scat fanatics. The only question is how much longer are they going to make us wait for it? Wankers!
