Back in January I was discussing music with Willowtip Records’ head honcho Jason Tipton and asked him to recommend me something new to check out. Without hesitation the first thing he told me was to get the debut full length from Sweden’s Gadget. I asked him what they sounded like and he told me to picture Nasum mixed with Circle Of Dead Children. In the instant I was sold and bought the album that same day. Was Jason right? You’re damn fucking skippy! In the 3+ years I’ve known him he’s never let me down in picking killer grind bands, either on his label or elsewhere. Remote is 29 minutes and 52 seconds of razorsharp, blasting, shrieking grind insanity. The band have unquestionably been influenced heavy by country and labelmates Nasum in their musical approach, delivery, production and sound, but don’t be fooled into believing they’re a mere Nasum clone, these guys are a band all their own. Every member of the band knows how to handle their instrument, and how to piece together a solid, crushing song in two minutes or less. When the band shred they leave almost all other bands in their wake, shrieking, wailing, blasting and pounding their way through each second, but they can also mix it up and create some of the most inspiring music I’ve heard in a long long time. The track "Failure" just kills me. It’s by far one of the best written and best performed songs I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to and has been put on repeat so many times I can’t even begin to count the number of times I’ve listened to it in the past two months, easily well over 150 times. It’s not the typical blast-grind assault, but it’s more emotional, like one of the less intense Nasum songs, only deeper. The rest of the album doesn’t strike me in quite the same manner, if it did, I don’t think I’d be able to handle listening to it in it’s entirety. This is one of those albums that has so much variety in such a short span that it becomes addictive to the point where you find yourself not wanting to listen to anything else. Jason Tipton recommended this album to me, and now, I’m recommending this to all of you. If you buy one grind album released in 2004, this is the only album to even consider buying. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must get back to listening to "Failure" a dozen more times.
