The Grand Grimoire consists of nine tracks of grindy death-thrash with vocals very much along the lines of Carcass/typical black metal. Unfortunately it’s not a very original brand of metal. The album opens with "The Art Of Immolation", which is basically a lesson in "how not to write a song", pure dull blast beats and unoriginal music. "The Grand Grimoire" has a very good instrumental section which is very well played, however the song is basically ruined by typical black metalish continuous blast beat monotony. "The Luciferian Episode" is a thirty-two second instrumental track and doesn’t really add much to the album. "Under A Silver Moon" starts off poorly, with a rather punk-grungy guitaring and boring black metal blast beats, however as the song progresses and gets slower and more melodic and instrument oriented, the band proves their true musical potential. "The Somberness Of Winter" is one of the better tracks on the album, with a decent groove and tolerable drumming, unfortunately the vocals don’t mix well with the music at all. "Sickening Harp Rasps" is even worse than the opening track and is immediately skipped when it plays through on my CD player. "Into A Dark Millenium" is probably my favorite track on this disc, which isn’t saying much, although this track is much slower than many of the others, unfortunately it is ruined by the endless black metal wanna-be monotony of God Dethroned’s music. The remaining tracks are nothing amazing, although I believe "Fire" is a cover song, I have no idea which band tho, whether it is a cover or not, it’s still rather dull. Lyrically, musically, vocally God Dethroned is nothing new, you’re probably heard it all before and heard it all played much better than this.
