Godless Rising, a couple of ex-dudes from Vital Remains offer up some slower-paced satanic and straight forward death metal. Yippie.
I was listening to a George Strait tune this morning. My old lady likes country. I can’t do nuthin’ about it. A song came on the satellite called "I Hate Everything". I spent a few minutes mocking the tune, wondering aloud how some dude like George Strait could hate everything. I find that dudes who write this kind of stuff while strumming an acoustic guitar and wearing a cowboy hat must be some of the most self-pitying morons on the planet. I for one, do not feel this hatred coming through the speakers. All I hear is an overworked harmonizer and someone excreting lies and garbage out of their hillbilly mouth. I wonder what gives white bread fucking crackers like this is the entitlement to hating everything. It blows my mind.
Reading along with the lyrics on this 2006 effort, I find myself reading about some satanic influenced hatred. Oh boy. Sacrificing mortals, stomping on the faces of angels and eating Jesus’ cross. When mixed with some unspeakably generic mid-paced death metal riffs, I wonder if Godless Rising is the death metal version of George Strait. Probably not a total ass clown to share a beer with, but much too obsessed about some lame image.
Apparently, I am supposed to be listening to two guitars on this extended EP that features some re-recorded tracks. I can’t really tell them apart on account of the dull production. Nothing jumps out at me here, from the echoing guttural yelps, to the rolling thunder of uninspired double bass, the overly thumping bass to the thin and almost twangy (lack of) crunch of the guitars.
Look, I fuck god’s face as often and with as little mercy as the next fella but in 2008, releasing death metal than sounds like it came out of Florida in 1993 before being promptly forgotten about just doesn’t really offer anything fresh or exciting to me. As far as debut releases go, this is definitely a band playing it safe without having to risk creating their own sound or making the material stand out above an endless sea of demo material that folks like me file away never to be picked up again.
