My first introduction to Czech Republic’s Godless Truth was 2001’s selfRealization on Shindy Productions, which I somehow didn’t get around to reviewing (sorry guys). I did skim through it quickly though, and what I remember most about that release was the awesome packaging, the Jonzig cover art sucked, as per usual, but they put a snowy sheet of semi-gloss tracing paper over it with the band’s logo and album title, which really caught my attention. Personally, I think it’s one of the absolute coolest things I’ve seen, as far as packaging is concerned, and the booklet itself was really well done and one of the nicer I’ve laid eyes on. Other than that, there wasn’t much memorable about the release, musically it was just standard American-styled brutal death metal. Skip ahead 3 years and Arrogance Of Supreme Power is released. Once again the cover art this time by Joel of Pyaemia isn’t anything special and is a little ridiculous, but, again, the overall packaging is pretty cool, and the music? Pretty much the same. Most bands I’ve heard from the Czech Republic have completely blown me away, but when it comes to brutal death metal, Godless Truth stick to the pre-existing formula, rather than experimenting off in weird and wondrous directions as country mates Alienation Mental, Ahumado Granujo and Cerebral Turbulency have done with grind. Musically Godless Truth sounds a lot like you’re average typical groove-heavy brutal death metal band. Their influences are obviously bands like Internal Bleeding, Dying Fetus, Vomit Remnants and Prophecy. Personally, I’ve never been a big fan of that style of music as all of the moshy breakdowns just remind me far too much of hardcore and realizing that when these bands hit the stage, the people who dig this kind of music turn into instant gorilla ninjas and start doing their Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee impressions on one another makes my interest wane even further. After listening to music like this I often feel far stupider than when I began, and I realize all of the music I truly enjoy is really stupid to begin with, but this… ugh. There is obviously a following for this kind of music, I know, because I have been to music festivals where every band sounds exactly like this, and after going to two of those, I have no interest to ever listen to this style of music again. Maybe if I were to fall down a flight of stairs and suffer some serious head injury, I may be intrigued by pit riff heavy broodle death, but I’ve yet to suffer that fate. Just thinking about that makes me want to wear a helmet at all times.
