What do you get when you take a love of Arnold Schwarzenegger and mix it with a love of Carcass and brutal death metal and goregrind? Goretorture’s Promised To Kill You Last… I Lied. Goretorture is a one man project by a Finnish musician going by the name Gurglenator who plays all guitars, bass and does the vocals, plus programmed the drum machine he likes to call Mr. Brutal Robot. The music on this album is generally mid-paced chugging brutal deathgrind with shifted vocals and a solid catchy groove with the drum machine programmed to fit the music well and isn’t simply set and left on blastomatic. It’s hard to pinpoint exact influences, but it’s safe to say Gurglenator is a big fan of lo-fi goregrind, mid-paced brutal death metal and Carcass, without being an obvious rip-off. Promised To Kill You Last… I Lied is filled with an endless stream of Arnold Schwarzenegger samples from various movies, interviews and political speeches, not just in the intros and outros, but randomly throughout some of the tracks as well. Some of these samples tend to go on for entirely too long, generally the ones from political rally speeches, but the music itself, though simplistic for the most part, is effective and rather entertaining. The inclusion of movie samples throughout the songs almost makes it feel like Arnold Schwarzenegger is an honorary member of the band, which is both hilarious and kind of cool. This definitely is not the most highbrow music ever recorded, but there’s enough on here to interest a fairly broad range of extreme music fans. As stupid as this album may be, it’s fun, and I’m actually kind of hoping there’s a follow-up release in the works.
