Gorguts is a name every diehard death metal fan should be familiar with. For those few poseurs out there who are completely unaware of this band; Gorguts are one of the few death metal bands who are worthy of the title "legend". Gorguts started out as a Death-inspired act in the early 90s and, over the years, morphed into one of the most technical, bizarre and jaw-droppingly complex death metal acts of all time. The group’s 1990 demo …And Then Comes Lividity has long been considered one of the finest death metal demos of all time and has been sought after by fans for years. In 2003 the group decided to release the demo officially, along with a collection of demo versions of songs from every album the group has released to date. The first 5 tracks come straight from the legendary …And Then Comes Lividity demo, which, as I stated earlier, was heavily inspired by Death and has that strong technically melodic vibe to it and automatically makes this album a must own for all Gorguts fans. The next 12 tracks are pre-production demo versions of songs from Considered Dead, Erosion Of Sanity and Obscura. All of the material on these tracks is fucking incredible, seeing as they came from 3 of the greatest death metal albums ever recorded, however, being pre-production demos, the sound quality for most of it is pretty shit-awful, though, strangely, the pre-production demo material for Considered Dead and Erosion Of Sanity sound a lot better and more polished than the experi-metal Obscura material, but give you a pretty good idea of what the raw material sounded like before the final product was recorded, mixed and mastered. Also included is a live track of "Inoculated Life" recorded in Val D’or, Quebec in 1993 which shows the band put on a great performance back then, but the audio quality is still pretty piss poor. The reason why the other demo material was included is because at the time the album was released both Considered Dead and Erosion Of Sanity were out of print and the rights to both albums is owned by Roadrunner, so to give fans who otherwise maybe wouldn’t have heard the material a chance to check it out, they included demo material from the earlier releases. Since that time, however, Roadrunner has re-issued the two full length efforts as a 2-for-1, which is available in music shops everywhere, which makes this album basically a must own only for the diehard fanatics of the group needing to own …And Then Comes Lividity on CD. There is absolutely no denying the greatness of Gorguts, so if you haven’t already heard them, be sure to pick up the 2-for-1 release immediately, plus Obscura and From Wisdom To Hate, just be aware that there is a major difference in songwriting, style and structure between Erosion Of Sanity and Obscura. I can’t recommend Gorguts enough, but, like I said, this is really only necessary for the diehard fan, everyone else should just pick up the 2-for-1.
