Many talented musicians have written for Teufel’s Tomb over the years; from Abbas Jaffary (ex-Ember/ex-Novembers Doom) and Reggie (of California’s Bane) to Josh Martin (ex-Anal Cunt/Adolf Satan) and SCSI (Lord Gore), but none have written as solid heavy-as-a-load-of-bricks death metal as Damian Scott in Impurity. I’m not entirely sure what inspired him to write such dark music, but I think it probably has something to do with his parents naming him Patita, a name so girly he felt the need to hide it from his death metal brethren and go under the moniker of Damian. Over the years, I’ve received many complaints regarding some of Damian’s reviews, but having listened to Impurity’s Unearthly Affinity it’s officially safe to say that he’s right and you’re a fat gay retard for disagreeing with him, regardless of the subject, so shut your fat piehole and choke on this; Unearthly Affinity is 5 tracks of crushing old school mid-paced dark death metal in the vein of early Incantation mixed with Malevolent Creation, Nile, Immolation and Privilege Of Evil-era Amorphis. Musically the material isn’t super technical with emphasis put on just writing solid heavy music without a lot of flair. The vocals of Ed Makowske are similar to those of Craig Pillard’s and adds to the overall dark feel. The riffing has a strong Incantation style for the most part, just heavy and dark with a solid, but not overwhelming, drumming style in the background. The production, handled by Juan "Punchy" Gonzalez, is probably his best work to date, sounding infinitely better than the production for Morbid Angel’s Heretic and the Diabolic and Unholy Ghost releases. The sound is perfect for the group’s style of dark death metal and is a production that bands like Immolation and Incantation should strive to achieve. My only complaint is that the recording is only 15 minutes long, and I definitely want to hear more. Hopefully their full length material will turn out just as well as this mCD. If you’re into dark death metal and want to hear something new and heavy, definitely check out Impurity’s Unearthly Affinity along with Destroying Divinity’s Hell Unleashed. Great stuff!
