Incantation are one of the longest-running death metal in North America with 8 full length albums, 3 EPs, a single, a live album and played hundreds (if not thousands) of shows throughout the world during their 17 year reign in the metal underground. While musicians like Will Rahmer (Mortician), Dave Culross (Malevolent Creation), Daniel Corchado (The Chasm), Craig Pillard (Disciples Of Mockery) and Rob Yench (Mausoleum) have come and gone, the style and sound of Incantation has never really strayed far from the sound they created with the earliest demo material and remains, to this day, darkened death metal fused with doom.
That said, while Incantation’s basic style and sound hasn’t changed, the material they write only seems to get better with time and I can say, with all honesty, that Primordial Domination is easily the best Incantation full length since Mortal Throne Of Nazarene. Considering how big of a fan I am of The Forsaken Mourning Of Angelic Anguish, The Infernal Storm and Decimate Christendom that should speak volumes for the quality of the material contained on Primordial Domination.
The intensity level of the album is very high with a lot of aggression being displayed in the riffing. The vocals have improved greatly since the last effort as John McEntee has developed more depth and range in the past few years since he took over as vocalist. While the traditional Incantation sound is heard throughout the album there are moments where you notice they’ve fused other band’s material in with their own, like the instrumental title track which sounds like it’s straight off of the latest Bolt Thrower release and "The Stench Of The Crucifix" which has moments that sound similar to material from the recent Slayer full length offering (I mean that in a good way).
If you’re already an Incantation fan, rest assured you’ll be snapping your neck banging your head to this effort. If you’re one of those people who was a fan but lost interest over the years, this is the album that’ll make you a born-again Incantation fan. For anyone who’s never heard the band before this is a great album to start with, especially if you’re a fan of old school death metal.
