Life is the fourth full length installment in France-based grinders Inhumate’s seven album conceptual piece, starting with the beginning of life, through to the end of life on earth and what lies beyond. Life basically delves into the subject of adulthood and "sharing the maturity time", whatever that means exactly. Either way, it doesn’t really matter what the concept is, since the music is just straight-ahead blasting grindcore with incomprehensible vocals anyway. This album musically reminds me a lot of old school grindcore like Scum-era Napalm Death and Extreme Noise Terror, only with a lot less interesting song structure. Maybe it’s the non-stop blasting, but there’s just something about this release that makes me so incredibly bored I just want to shut it off and go take a nap. There are basically no hooks on this release; it’s just one blasting, shred-a-thon that leads right into another blasting shred-a-thon. There’s a few different vocals on this release, a deep grizzly bear growl, a higher pitched throaty rasp and a pitch shifted gurgle, which is okay, but every second there’s someone barking something, and after about 2 minutes it gets really old really fast. After a while the song structures all seem to meld together and every song starts to sound exactly the same. Honestly, this is one of the most boring grindcore releases I’ve ever had the misfortune to listen to. It’s obvious these guys have musical talent, as the music is very tight and well played, and the riffs are pretty decent, but everything combined is just like listening to a chainsaw shred away for half an hour; after a while it just gets really annoying and you just want it to stop. Leave it to the French to take a brilliant British concept and turn it into a steaming pile of "Meh."
