Australia’s Killengod are a rather strange band and somewhat difficult to categorize accurately. Their unique blend of death, black and thrash metal is best described as Deicide with heavy Death and Metallica influences. The music is rather simplistic, the band certainly will not blow people away with brutality or technicality as their music is extremely tame by today’s standards. What the band lacks in speed or technical skill they make up for with strong rhythm and groove along with the use of all four members’ windpipes. All four members sing in completely different styles and the band is able to combine them together in a seamless matter that enhances their music. The vocal patterns are what sells this album for me. The band does use an awful lot of blackmetal-ish intros which seem rather unnecessary to me. On the whole Killengod aren’t as bad as I’d been told and been expecting, but they’re far from being a great band. They simply lack the energy, depth and anger that fuels extreme metal, it’s just too laid back for my liking. If they turn the aggression up a few notches and tune the instruments down a bit they could make themselves heavier they could make a name for themselves, their vocals only take them so far and it’s just not far enough. Into The Ancient Moon may be liked among death-thrash or Deicide fans, but those looking for something heavy, sick and brutal, keep looking.
