I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first listened to Texas’ Kill The Client as I hadn’t really bothered gathering too much information about them, apart from they had a member of Kalibas in their ranks at one point. The first time I listened to their debut, Wage Slave, was immediately after listening to Napalm Death‘s Leaders Not Followers Pt 2 and The Code Is Red…Long Live The Code. At first I thought I’d accidentally started playing Napalm Death again, but after a few moments I started to realize that it wasn’t Napalm Death spinning in the stereo, because Napalm Death hasn’t sounded this pissed off and angry in years. At that point the bell in my head dinged and I realized I was listening to Kill The Client. Then I sneezed and the CD was over. After listening to Wage Slave a few more times I started get a clearer picture of the band’s overall sound. The vocals themselves sound similar to Barney Greenway at times, which is where I think the band will get a lot of Napalm Death comparisons, well, that and the artwork is done by longtime Napalm Death cover artist Rob Middleton. The music itself sounds more of a hybrid between new school and old school, like a mix between Napalm Death & Terrorizer with North American grinding death acts like Circle Of Dead Children & Pig Destroyer. The songs are short, fast, angry and heavy, with the longest track clocking in at a mere 1:38. I often find that a lot of bands that are an endless barrage of blasting are generally pretty boring, but Kill The Client‘s style is actually suited for blasting and enhances the overall sound. A lot of bands have 3 minute songs of relentless blasting and yelling. With Kill The Client you only hear the same riffs and drum beats for a few seconds before the next song kicks in. This is the way grind should be. Don’t fuck around writing 5 minute songs where all you do is wail away, keep it short and simple. That’s the way Napalm Death did it in the early days, that’s the way Assuck did it and this is the way Kill The Client does it. On Wage Slave you won’t be bombarded with wanky solos or super technical displays, you’re just going to get your head kicked in, and I’m okay with that. The entire CD is just over 14 minutes, and with 11 songs, if there’s one song you find annoying, you only need to wait a few seconds for the next song to kick in. Kill The Client are blazing grinding death that will appeal to a large group of people over several genres of metal, and while I didn’t like it the first time I heard it, given a few more listens, I caught on and am digging it. With bands like Kill The Client and Gadget, I think the future of grinding death is looking pretty bright.
