Five years since the release of the laughably bad St. Anger, Man Francisco-based Metallica are back with their ninth full length studio effort entitled Death Magnetic. For months the hype surrounding this album has been building with everyone claiming that Death Magnetic is Metallica’s triumphant return to the sound that made them famous in the 80s. I don’t know what drugs these people were doing, but they’d better share because I sure as shit don’t hear anything remotely close to being as entertaining as anything on Kill ‘Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets, …And Justice For All or even the black album.
Before I get into the music, what the fuck is a “Death Magnetic”? That doesn’t even make any fucking sense. A death magnet makes sense, even magnetic death, while stupid, makes a bit more sense, but Death Magnetic? It’s a good thing these douche bags became rock stars because with that third grade education they sure as shit aren’t going to be sending astronauts into space.
Secondly… what the fuck is up with that album cover? I understand what the concept is supposed to be; a magnetic coffin, but it looks more like a magnetic asshole that’s coated in thick man hair and gaped from vigorous man on man anal pounding. The only thing it’s missing is a gerbil’s head sticking out of the coffin.
Onto the music… I’ve heard a lot of people say that this album is Master Of Puppets part two, to which I can’t help but laugh uncontrollably while trying to subdue my urge to grab them by the throat and throw them through a window. I’ve heard even more people claim that Death Magnetic sounds like a continuation of …And Justice For All, a statement that makes me need to grab my wrist firmly and pull my hand towards my wrist so I don’t backhand them in the mouth so hard that I leave a permanent hand print upside their head.
Here’s what Death Magnetic is really like; the songs are fucking long. Really fucking long, 10 tracks in just short of 75 minutes which means there are a ton of redundancies throughout the album, many of the tracks are really over after about two minutes, but they just go on and on and on ad nauseum.
The production of the release brings the band back to their old sound, with a deeper bass tone, clean higher pitched guitar tones, and a drum sound that actually sounds like drums and not some retard banging on pots and pans like the shit on St. Anger.
The song structures are a mix of material from …And Justice Of All, the black album and Load. The material sounds a lot more powerful than it really is due to the meatier production, but the songs themselves are pretty fucking boring, at no point do I find myself ready to tap my toes, let alone thrash like I used to do to the old material back in my teens. The music is just lifeless and dull, almost as if four millionaires entered a recording studio with the sole purpose of trying to record an old school Metallica album only they’re no longer capable of writing anything even remotely entertaining.
The material on Death Magnetic tends to be simplistic thrash rock in nature with the band rehashing old riffs and trying to pass it off as something new. On every song I find myself thinking “Hey, I remember that riff from Load, hey, that follow-up was from Master Of Puppets, hey, why the fuck isn’t there anything new on here? Couldn’t these washed up has beens at least pay someone to write them a decent riff?”
Fans of early Metallica, especially those who’ve grown to appreciate more extreme forms of metal, aren’t going to be impressed by Death Magnetic, unfortunately Metallica didn’t write this album for us, Death Magnetic was written to bring back the fan base they developed with the black album and in that regard, they’ll succeed. There’s no doubt in my mind that this album will sell millions of copies, the band will line their pockets with more obscene amounts of money and they’ll win tons of Grammys, but, lets face it we all know those awards are a farce, any organization that’ll hand Black Eyed Peas an award for anything other than winning a “Piss Your Pants In Public” contest is a fucking sham.
We all know at least one of these wanna-be metalheads who one day are contentedly jacking off to the latest Clay Aikens album and the next are wandering around sporting a Metallica t-shirt because they heard a song of theirs on the radio. There’s no doubt my fall is going to be filled with seeing douche bag retards trying to impress the ladies by sporting old school Metallica shirts they bought at Hot Topic. At every stop light for the rest of the year I’m going to be forced to listen to some ballless fucktard blaring Death Magnetic on his mom’s mini van stereo as he drives off to school. I already have the desire to punch random strangers in the face because I know they’re going to become born again Metallica fans.
Fuck Metallica, fuck anyone who likes any material they’ve recorded in the past 19 years and fuck any retard who claims that Death Magnetic is a resurgence of old school Metallica. You’re a fucking mindless sheep who’ll agree with any ridiculous statement that the band, and Warner Bros Records, publicity reps are willing to spout forth. I just want to take a dump on your chest, and while doing so telling you it’s a spa treatment and will leave you feeling 10 years younger, because you’ll buy into anything you stupid fucks.
To be fair, Death Magnetic is much better than anything Metallica has recorded in the past 17 years, but saying Death Magnetic is better than the black album, Load or St. Anger is the same as being glad that you shit your pants instead of shitting your bed. You’re still covered in shit no matter what you do, which is exactly how my ears feel after listening to this over hyped piece of shit. I need to go grab a toilet brush and scrub my ears clean now.

Totally agree with this review. This album is just pure overhyped bullshit. Ok the drumsound is better than on St. Anger but that’s all that is better. This album is really just done because of getting more money with it. It’s like the band was thinking “hey it doesn’t matter what songs we’ll have on the new one, our stupid retarded faggot fans will buy it for sure anyway.”
02/10 points (for the better drumsound)
In my opinion the funny drum sound was the best thing on st. anger.
-1 point for the new drum sound.
“We all know at least one of these wanna-be metalheads who one day are contentedly jacking off to the latest Clay Aikens album and the next are wandering around sporting a Metallica t-shirt because they heard a song of theirs on the radio.”
At least one? What an understatement. There are thousands of these deluded metalheads in my home town alone (except for the Clay Aikens bit). I’m now too embarrassed to wear metal shirts in public. Great review. Also, I think “ballless” is a funny word. Three Ls in a row. Heh…
I respectfully disagree. I listen to real metal like slayer and at the gates (among other things like great nonmetal bands like Iron and Wine and Wilco) and I love this record. Not withstanding the aweful lyrics of cyanide and broken beaten and scarred and the out of place unforgiven III (why are they still unforgiven..why do I care) I think it’s a great record and I hated the black album other than sad but true and my friend of misery. I like Metallica because it rocks for me..who cares if it’s not reign in blood or rust in peace. To be honest..with the exception of Down I’ve been very bored with heavy music as of late and I’m grateful to have something decent to listen to. It’ll never be Master of Puppets but if you can name me one metal record..just one..thats as complete that not only metal but rock fans cherish above almost any other I will not only eat that shit but shit out the shit and then re-eat it.
As a metal album, it’s a complete failure. As a Metallica album… it’s better than what they’ve put out in recent years, but that still doesn’t mean it’s any good. Even Rollins Band’s “Nice” was better than this. Hell, even Danzig’s “Blackacidevil” is better. It’s still better than the new Megadeth though… which really isn’t saying much.
This review is spot on, especially the second to last paragraph. I couldn’t have said it better myself.
my thoughts exactly. it’s downright painful to hear them try to disguise the fact that they’re rehashing old riffs and failing miserably. there’s not one song that has a decent riff on the whole fucking album. but yeah, they’ll sell millions. people these days are so numbed by marketing that they’ll buy anything as long as they’re told often enough that it’s good.
DEATH MAGNETIC IS THE BEST METALLICA HAVE EVER MADE IT’S GREAT,ORIGINAL,BRILLIANT!!!THE RIFFS ARE INCREDIBLE IT’S REALLY THE SEQUEL OF MASTER OF PUPPETS,IF YOU REALLY LOVE METALLICA THIS IS THE PERFECT ALBUM FOR YOU!!!THEY KICKS FUCKING ASSS!!THIS ALBUM IS PSYCHO!!VERY VERY GOOD ALBUM AND VERY VERY BETTER THAN ST.ANGER.BUY THE ALBUM OR DOWNLOAD IT IT’S REALLY GREAT
C’mon Teufy, the album isn’t THAT bad. They’ve rehashed riffs but what else would you expect them to do? What death metal band has 9 albums’ worth of novel material in their discography? As much as you love Deeds of Flesh and as much as you and I both love Incantation, they have done nothing but regurgitate themselves, time and again. Mad props for their integrity of course but calling Death Magnetic redundant is a bit moot.
There are riffs aplenty on this record if you’re willing to cast aside your blinders and disregard the trendies who will be spreading their thick, vicous semen over that cover art. Listen to ‘All Nightmare Long’, listen to the riff after the starting groove on ‘Broken, Beat and Scarred. The songs are too long but there are some genuinely good riffs in there too.
That is thick, viscous semen in case you’re curious.
If you can listen to this album and be of the honest belief that it is both good and worth listening to more than once, then I applaud you… not for having the stomach to listen to it or for being so deluded that you actually think it’s worthwhile, but I’m impressed that you can fold yourself up like an accordion and stick your own dick and balls in your mouth. It’s an impressive feat… gay, but impressive. Nice party trick!

Whoa, look how much Teufel hates the new Metallica album! That is so fucking metal! Seriously bro, you like, proved your credibility as a metalhead beyond any doubt. Arrogant prick.
Awww… shucks! You noticed! Thanks!
Teufel, litesn man,i think you should see a doctor,
i hope for you that he will cure your “anti-metallica” disease,
seriously,man,
you are an asshole.
And you have shitty taste in music, what’s your point?
What a great album, my god!!!!!!!and what a great asshole, my god!
Looks like all the born again Metallica fans are defending their new favourite band in a laughable attempt to be metal, or to appear faithful to an album they probably heard only ten minutes prior to posting their messages here. Pahhhh-thetic!!
This cd is awesome! Teufel’s and idiot and the ppl that agree w/ him are too. Just cuz Metallica doesn’t make the same frickin album over and over like megadeath and slayer doesn’t mean they suck now. How many other bands try new stuff? exaclty! none of them. I love metallica and i can admit that reload and st. anger were pretty sucky but i’m one of the few that liked load, because it was different. sorry on metallica’s part for not bein unoriginal bastards like all those wannabe metalbands. so many bands coppied metallica and they took the initive to try somethin new and it didn’t work, so what, it was something new and now death magnetic is takin them back to right before the black album imo. like it or don’t i could care less, but its an awesome rock album and deffinately worth getting.
Your review was sad. Had you attempted objectivity I would have respected your opinion.. This page is bullshit… And, “Bruce Lee died for my sins”.
Piece of shit album by a piece of shit band. The drumming is shit, the solos make kerry king’s work sounds technically masterful, the vocals are gay, the riffs are generic, simplistic and boring and the cover art looks like it was taken from the goatse website. This piece festering, aids infested whore of an album will still sell millions more than quality thrash albums released this year like The Formation of Damnation or the upcoming Destruction release, further proving that this planet is fucked up beyond repair.
Well I think this is a case of the Damned if you do damned if you don’t for Metallica. All the bitching (rightfully so) about Black, Load, Reload and Anger, one would think that one would be happy that Metallica has returned to their origianl (not that all original but hey it’s their’s) Sound. I think this leaps and bounds above Black, Load and Reload (even though there are a couple of songs I like on those albums). I never hated St. Anger and felt it was a step in the right direction. I liked the raw sound and yes even the drums on that album. But man did it get old quick.
I think this album is a cross between Justice and Anger. So I am happy. Will Metallica ever sound like Kill, Lightning, and Master again? Probably not but thats OK with me. I for one can’t listen to those albums anymore. If I listen to any Old Metallica it’s Justice. That sounds just as fresh today as it did then.
I sort of understand the HAte for Metallica. I mean they sold out. However Black made them accessible which was not really a bad thing. After they got all the new fans they should have gone back. Instead we got Load and Reload which are Winger like trash. Guitar sololess St. Anger was a sell out also trying to sound a bit like all the heavy riff bands of the day. And in a way Death is a sellout album also. A sellout to their old fans. I will take that over the other stuff any day. I for one am glad that they don’t sound like the other “true” metal bands out there because the wouldnt sound like Metallica.
But as can be seen they can’t please everyone. Damned if you do. Damned if you don’t.
metallica’s new album is quite good. i was surprised when i heard ‘My Apocalypse’ single and the rest of the songs when i downloaded the album. they got back to their old roots, more towards fast trash metal. its like hearing kill em all album but with better recording sound. haha..! this is better than st anger to be honest. i just don’t like the drums sound in that. this album although got some songs sounded like from st anger a bit but with this kinda drum snare sound, its much cooler. they got nothing to prove anyways. they just do whatever they wanna do. they cant really create songs like the old albums and its better not. let them create something else, that’s how they grow..and i’m glad they found their sound back after so long..give them time to heal..this album just proves that they’re uniting as a band again..i mean kirk gets to solo again! i was happy abt that. hehe..overall, metallica is back! i love this album..it may not be a classic but its a damn fine metallica album in a long time for sure..
i lol’d!! great review, i could not agree more.
To back up your points, Teufel; what riff did you hear that was in Load? What follow-up did you recognise from Master of Puppets?
I understand this may be an exaggerated description to get your point across, but you have claimed that Metallica are re-using old riffs. I would kindly like you to point out which riffs they’ve re-used. Thanks.
