Considering I’d never even heard of Neuro-Visceral Exhumation before, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up this album. Knowing it was being released by the fine folks at No Escape Records, I had an idea that it would be very very heavy. The first thing you hear when you press play is an incredibly cheesy intro from one of the Faces Of Death videos, to which I simply rolled my eyes and sighed, feeling like I was going to be in for a very long and very boring album. I was wrong. Very wrong. Mass Murder Festival is 18 tracks of unrelenting, uninhibited and completely inhuman goregrind. Listening to Mass Murder Festival is like sitting behind the wheel of a 1970 Plymouth Baracuda and turning the key in the ignition; the roar that engine is matched only by the roar of bass, drums, guitar and vocals of Neuro-Visceral Exhumation. The only difference is, owning the ‘Cuda will get teenage girls throwing their panties at you as you drive by, whereas Mass Murder Festival will only get old religious women throwing bibles and fruit at you. The production has a very raw Last Days Of Humanity feel, perfect for the style of music they play, but they mix it up with the catchy riffing style of Cock And Ball Torture, while mixing in elements of Malignant Tumor, Dead Infection, GUT and Regurgitate without actually sounding like a direct clone of any of those bands. The thing I love about this band is they write completely uncreative music, while still somehow sounding completely unique and seperate from all of the other bands that play in a similar style. What seperates them from most other goregrind bands is their drummer can actually play, and is willing to mix it up, rather than continue along a relentlessly monotonous beat, making for a much more entertaining sound. If you’re into goregrind, then this album will most definitely be appealing to you, if you’re into the genre and listen to the album and don’t like it, chances are your dad is married to someone named Richard and your mother’s new husband is your second cousin.
