The masturbators of the war god, Nile, are back with their sixth full length effort titled Those Whom The Gods Detest. For those of you familiar with the earlier works of Nile you already know what to expect from this effort and have already decided whether you’re going to be interested in this or not.
For those of you who are new to death metal, or have simply been living in a cave for the past decade, Nile are a South Carolina-based three-piece death metal outfit who’ve built a cult following for their inventive fusion of blasting technical death metal and non-traditional Middle Eastern influences. In essence, the music of Nile is like playing a blasting death metal album and an ancient Egyptian-themed movie soundtrack in unison.
Despite the band’s popularity, I’ve never been a fan of Nile. I’ve always found they put style over substance with regards to their music. Recent efforts have reminded me very much of late 90s-early 00s Dying Fetus and Cannibal Corpse, not stylistically, but just in the manner that they started out with a successful more simplistic approach and rather than continue creating catchy music, they decided to try to be the fastest, most technical, most blastingly brutal band in the scene, all while completely forgetting how to write a memorable riff, let alone a memorable song or worthwhile album.
On Those Whom The Gods Detest it seems Nile have decided to do something they haven’t done in quite a while and are actually making an effort to write some good material and with moderate success. The album starts out with easily the best Nile song in quite a while, “Kafir!”, which sees an even mix of blasting and shredding and mid-paced chugging. Enough time and effort is put into the song writing and structure to actually make it worthy of several listens, which surprised the shit out of me considering how quickly I tend to zone out while listening to Nile albums.
The solid song writing continues on the following track, “Hittie Dung Incantation”, although this is also where things start to fall apart as the vocal cadence does not match the music in the slightest which takes away from the song quite a bit. They follow up with some pure technical Cannibal Corpse worship to start out “Utterances Of The Crawling Dead”, however don’t go overboard and stick with a relatively more simplistic catchy death metal approach.
The title track starts with non-traditional acoustic guitar playing, before breaking into a mix of high paced technical shredding and slow paced plodding chugging. The faster material is typical of Nile, but the slow paced approach is something I don’t recall hearing on previous efforts, then again I usually fall asleep after 5 minutes. It almost seems like Nile are attempting to bring Incantation-style doom into their material, but simply aren’t capable of pulling it off. “4th Arra Of Dagon” is a continuation of this snail’s paced approach and gets old after about two minutes but continues on for another six and a half minutes.
“Permitting The Noble Dead To Descend To The Underworld” sees Nile returning to their typical blasting/shredding style. This track is followed by a typical Egyptian atmospheric song, which I guess is them giving a reach around to the war god, or something. Following this interlude are the remaining three tracks “Kem Khefa Kheshef”, “The Eye Of Ra” and “Iskander Dhul Kharnon”, all three of which are mid-to-up tempo death metal tracks which don’t flow very well and drone on for far too long.
On the whole, the song writing on Those Whom The Gods Detest is a vast improvement over previous releases through the first three tracks, but quickly deteriorates into some of Nile‘s most boring and uninspired material to date shortly thereafter. The guitar playing of Karl Sanders and Dallas Toler-Wade is solid, technically they’re very proficient, but the songwriting is more miss than hit. The vocal performances of both Karl and Dallas are pretty solid as well. The drumming of George Kollias is technically solid, but he relies on his triggers far too much and it often makes his drumming sound too mechanical. He does show some decent range as a drummer by being able to slow things way down and stick to a more simplistic approach on the slower tracks, but generally his drumming tends to distract my attention more than it flows with what Karl and Dallas are doing.
Nile are what they are. Their fans already know what to expect and whether they’ll like it before they even listen to it for the first time. Non-fans, such as myself, may find enjoyment out of the first 16 minutes of material on Those Whom The Gods Detest but will quickly lose interest and not make their way through the final 40. The album isn’t worthless, but it isn’t a must-own either. Nile do a few good things, but not enough to be worth spending money on this release. It was nice to see them attempt to go in a slightly different direction musically, unfortunately, they just aren’t good enough song writers to come up with a full album of quality material. It’s better than I expected, but still typically unsatisfying overall.

I listened to this album once and I haven’t had the inclination to listen to it again at all. I barely remember anything about this release.
It’s not terrible, but Nile are just really really boring. They’ve inspired a lot of really cool bands, but their own music is just… bland.
Nile is well….. Nile. All you need
is “in the Beginning” and randomly pick one or two
of their CD’s and you are set.
The best song Nile has ever written is “Sarcofagus” everything else is mediocre and repetitive.
You guys are unfair I think. Up to In their Darkened Shrines Nile had excellent variety. Their songwriting is really something. Unfortunately they have carved a niche for themselves and from that point on it went downhill. It’s too bad after all that Sanders made that solo project because he could use those ideas to spice up Nile songs. I’ve heard the new album and I liked the 3 first tunes too.
I lost interest in Nile after “In Their Darkened Shrines” because they started to stagnate pretty hard. “Those Whom the Gods Detest” is easily the best thing this band has put out since …Shrines. I think Dallas Toller-Wade’s vocals are put to really good use on this record, and the addition of hardcore-esque chanting gives the songs more depth.
I disagree with the notion that this album is “boring,” because, when compared to the band’s last few efforts, it shows a lot of attention to detail and songwriting.
I think it’s excellent.
Great album. Much better than the last one and one of the years best IMO. If you didn’t like them before, you will definitely not like them now. Move on to something with shredding bowels and dismembered corpses if you don’t like the Egyptian theme.
Another predictable addition to the sleep-inducing Nile back catalog.
Sleep-inducing???, Boring?????? Man I just don’t get these comments. Nile is one of the best death metal bands out there. I found this release their best since ‘In their darkened shrines’. Like Lonely Johnson, I agree-one of this yrs best IMO. This album has an epic feel to it and it’s super brutal. I love 4th arra of dagon. The chanting/chorus at the end of the song is epic and very catchy. But I do agree this release won’t really turn you into a Nile fan if you did not like them before. Album is a super brutal shredfest. I love the addition of the added vocal parts during Kafir!-creates an amazing atmosphere that transplants you to egypt. As for the drums-well most death metal drummers are using triggers these days, so I don’t really hold that against them. One of this yr’s best releases-but I do feel Asphyx’s-’Death..the Brutal Way’ is the best death metal release of ’09
Super brutal my ass, it is one of the more accessible death metal albums out there. The predictable eastern tinged riffs and solos get boring fast, the “epic” chanting is repetitive and lame and the more quiet acoustic based sections are unnecessary. Some of the liner notes are laughable aswell. For example, allah in the context of the islamic shahada does not mean “god”, it is merely the name of the islamic god, “allah”, thus the correct meaning of the verse is “There is no god but allah”, allah being an arabian moon deity that the early muslims and mohammed himself appropriated for their purposes of establishing a monotheistic religion without diverging completely from the beliefs and gods of the pagans he was trying to seduce. The word “god” in arabic is “ilah”. The mistranslation of the shahada proves that Sander’s is merely a truck driving ignoramus. I am not against music attacking religion, and would like to see islam pilloried more than what it is, however Sander’s ignorance renders the entire lyrical content of that song as mere faggotry.
There are certain historical fallacies to the liner notes for the last track aswell that I wont get into at this moment.
The only thing worthwhile with this band is the drumming, and most of the drummer’s best work is done with Sickening Horror.
NecroabortioN-if Nile is not brutal than I don’t know what is. Sure there are more brutal bands out there, but Nile have perfected their art of death metal and I give kuddos to Sanders for at least attempting to write thought provoking lyrics. Really how many death metal bands take the time to do research and write lyrics the way he does??? Not many. Majority of death metal lyrics are gore inspired/killing or have a political agenda-not that I mind those types of lyrics, however I find that Nile put alot of time into the music and crafting lyrics to tell a story. Now maybe Sanders is not a history major and is not up to date with all the facts, as you seem to be, but at least he’s trying and the liner notes are fantastic. I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but c’mon this is death metal, nnot rocket science. You say predictable eastern tinged riffs-hello-who was doing those types of riffs before nile, no one, they created those riffs and in doing do alot of bands ripped them off, like the newer Behemoth releases.
Another stupid review by Teufel. But then again I’ve grown used to it.
He didn’t mistranslate the shahada, you fucking dumbass, he merely used a very Anglo-friendly translation of it that’s been floating around for years. Given the makeup of his fanbase, that’s not too surprising.
Do a Google search for “There is no God but God”, and you don’t just find links to Nile lyrics. in fact, you find thousands of hits. Methinks you’re just jumping on this so you can brag about your “knowledge”.
You sure pretend to know a lot about shit that nobody gives a fuck about
Could not disagree more. Nile has been one of the most extreme death metal bands of the decade and continues to be with this release. If you don’t like Nile than you simply don’t enjoy death metal.
This one is very accessible.
album makes a good coaster.
so does your girlfriend’s cunt
Poor butt-hurt Nile fan can’t take criticism.
Nile is better than most shitty brutal death metal. Though I have to agree when people say their first albums were better, because they were far more simple. It is a pretty solid record that combines elements of new and old Nile. Seriously compare Nile to boring simple super antichristian shit like Deicide and you will see that Nile is better.
FUCKING SHIT YOURSELF FOR YOUR WORTHLESS EMBERESSING REVIEWS YOU PILE OF GARBAGE HUMAN. GO HOME TO YOUR DADDY AND HAVE FUN WHILE WE OTHERS ARE ENJOYING THIS FINE PICE OF DEATH METAL. EAT SHIT FUCKING HUMAN WASTE.
Nice review. Decent record.
So bad review for such a great record: Speaking Cannibal corpse or Incantation on a nile review ? What the…
Don’t give a fuck to this review , this cd prove Nile is ahead of the herd.
In their Darkened Shrines……………….
Still waiting for the follow up LP
