Obscured Secretions
Demo 2011

Genre:Brutal Death MetalFormat:CDTracks:2
Label:Self-ReleasedYear:2011

In 2008, three years after San Diego’s Disgorge released Parallels of Infinite Torture, bassist Ben Marlins succumbed to his battle with cancer, which sent Disgorge into an extended hiatus. Whether not feeling right continuing without Ben, or just wanting to do something different, longtime guitarist Diego Sanchez (not to be confused with the UFC fighter of the same name, though those would be some fucking sick pits) and guitarist Ed Talorda decided to leave Disgorge and do something on their own.

Disgorge is still going strong, with a new full length due out soon, with drummer Ricky Myers and vocalist Levi Fuselier joining forces with Suffocation & Decrepit Birth bassist Derek Boyer, Deeds of Flesh guitarist Erik Lindmark and new guitarist Brad Kole. Meanwhile, Diego and Ed have teamed up with former Disgorge vocalist Matti Way and Necrotic Disgorgement, Regurgitation and Heinous Killings drummer Jason Trecazzi to form Obscured Secretions.

If you’re just now finding out the news that three members of Disgorge have formed a new band and you’re thinking to yourself “Oh, cool! It’ll be great to hear them play something different.” then let me be the first to punch you in the head. Three members of Disgorge are going to play brutal death metal that sounds like, what else, Disgorge! Demo 2011 picks up where Parallels of Infinite Torture left off, as Diego and Ed shred their way through 7:32 of brutal, slamming death metal. Like the last Disgorge release, the songwriting is a mix of slow-paced chugging pit riffs, but mostly high-paced technical shredding, backed by a pummeling drum beat and fronted by inhuman, bowel-inverting inhaled gurgles.

It sounds like the demo was recorded in a single take, so there are some minor technical flaws throughout, but overall, this sounds very much like the logical progression from Parallels of Infinite Torture, though with just one guitarist rather than two, since Ed Talorda has moved over to play bass. Drummer Jason Trecazzi has a similar skill set to Ricky Myers, neither one will ever be confused for Sean Reinert or Gene Hoglan, but for blasting brutal death metal, they get the job done. The only unfortunate thing is the snare drums have a hollow sound, like banging on an empty paint can, which sometimes overwhelms the guitars and vocals, but, again, it’s a demo, and these things are to be expected.

As far as the vocals go, it’s classic Matti Way. I don’t know how the fuck he gets his vocals to sound so wet, but I think while most vocalists inhale from their diaphragm, he inhales from somewhere in his taint region, causing his pants to suck inwards, causing a vortex to form in his lower intestine. I bet he shits standing up. It’s ridiculously awesome.

Although the two tracks contained on Demo 2011 aren’t groundbreaking, it’s clear Obscured Secretions will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future, and I, for one, look forward to hearing a properly produced, mixed & mastered recording from them. If you’re a big Disgorge fan and can’t wait to hear more, you’ll be able to find these two tracks easily on YouTube, or any of a number of other websites. It’s not perfect yet, but I like where this is going. Not bad. Not bad at all.
