Perhaps it’s Peter Steele who causes me to associate the word "origin" with "feces", regardless, I think the association fits fairly well as a description for Origin’s demo A Coming Into Existence Musically Origin are one of those types of bands who seem to take a riff from another band’s music, take a drum pattern from another and a vocal pattern from yet another and stick it all together and attempt to pass it off as something interesting and original. The opening track "Lethal Manipulation (The Bone Crusher Chronicles)" has almost the exact rhythm of Cannibal Corpse’s infamous "Born In A Casket", while listening to this song the chorus ""I love to fuck the dead, demons in my head. Tearing at my brain."" echoes through my mind. The song also seems to borrow bits and pieces from various early Cryptopsy and Malevolent Creation tunes, leaving me wondering why anyone would even bother recording this. The second track "Sociocide" basically continues where the prior track leaves off, employing a similar rhythm, with a few non-guttural vocal sections reminiscent of James of Damaged’s style. For a track as uninteresting and boring as it is, it seems to go on for quite a while. "Manimal Instinct" is up next, seems as though these guys have listened to None So Vile one time too many, since that seems to be the sound they’re going for with this one. Thankfully this tape only has four tracks, the demo is completed with another Cannibal Corpse/Cryptopsy-tribute (or wanna-be, whichever term you prefer). The vocals of Mark Manning seem to be somewhere in the range of early Brett Hoffmann, both in style, pitch and depth, with the addition of guitarists Paul Ryan and Jeremy Turner adding backing vocals, it gives the vocals, as a whole, more of a Cryptopsy None So Vile sound. The music itself is well played, although highly ‘borrowed’ from more established acts, making it rather dull to me since I feel as though I’ve already heard this album a hundred times before even getting through the first listen. The drumming of George Fluke is triggered a bit too much for my liking, I think it’s rather obvious he couldn’t maintain any of those rhythms without a little help. Since the release of this demo tape last year, Origin have parted ways with Fluke and bassist Clint Appelhanz, and replaced them with bassist Doug Williams and drummer Paul Longstretch, of Cephalic Carnage and Angel Corpse respectively. I personally don’t think this will impact the music that much, unless someone else in the band starts writing the music, and stops listening to Eaten Back To Life and None So Vile The talent is there, but there’s just nothing here to really keep your interest. Yet another mediocre death metal release.
