In recent years it seems like every other release in underground music is a split release between goregrind acts. One of the more recent releases is the split between Poland’s Patologicum and Portugal’s Necrocannibal on Taiwan’s Rottenpyosis Records making this a universal affair. The first half of the split is handled by Patologicum and follows the basic goregrind pattern of a ridiculously long intro followed by lots of blasting and pitchshifted burpgurgles and knife-in-the-throat gasps. The music has a strong Mortician mixed with Eastern European goregrind feel to it with distorted guitars, clean and clear bass lines, simplistic drumming and short catchy songs. The inhaled gasps are pretty disgusting and I have a feeling the vocalist probably threw up a lot trying to keep that up throughout the 7 track recording. As with nearly every goregrind act, there’s a nod to Carcass on the first half of "Genital Grinder / Worldwide SARS Sprayer". I can’t even count the number of times I’ve heard that riff in goregrind albums, it’s easily the most over duplicated song in all of underground music. Other than that, the music neither blows me away, nor does it bore the shit out of me. It’s okay as background noise, but not something I’d listen to repeatedly and sit around cupping my imaginary microphone burping along to the music while fantasizing about killing. Necrocannibal eats up the rest of the time on this split with 12 tracks of one-man-band bedroom goregrind by a guy who wears a ski mask and old Cannibal Corpse logo t-shirt and refers to himself as simply Cannibal. I’m betting he’s probably vegan, lives in his parents’ basement and recorded this with the computer they bought him, so he’ll have to excuse me if I’m not shaking in my booties over his tough guy facade. This half of the split also has a lot of intros, which got old and stale about 5 years ago, but whatever. The first thing I noticed about Necrocannibal’s material is the cymbal sound is really fucking loud and Cannibal seems to have programmed it a lot into his drum machine. The vocals on this material is just fucking hilarious, it basically just sounds like the dude is singing into a vacuum cleaner, or getting his saliva sucked out with a dentist’s suction tool, it just sounds wet, sloppy and just plain goofy. Overall though, Necrocannibal’s songwriting is decent and his stuff sounds a bit like early Squash Bowels, but pretty hard to listen to without laughing with the ridiculous vocal effects. Neither Patologicum nor Necrocannibal are bands I’d say are worthy of much praise, while neither of them suck, they both just lack that "something" that bands like Catasexual Urge Motivation, Gigantic Brain, early Last Days Of Humanity, Cock And Ball Torture and Gut possess. You know that thing… I think it’s called talent. As far as goregrind goes, this stuff is pretty average, and if you do get it, it probably won’t stay in your stereo for long, I just don’t really feel anything about this album one way or another. Meh.
