It has been said that first impressions are the most important as they are the lasting impressions. In the case of Pentagoria they’re lucky I was able to move beyond the first impressions. The packaging for this CD is, at best, pathetic. I have no idea what the album cover is, but it wouldn’t surprise me to find it out it was colonoscopy picture, it certainly does look like shit whatever it is. The next thing I noticed was the brilliant song numbering on the back, whoever did this obviously failed grade 3 math a few times, it is listed in roman numerals as follows; I, VIIII, III, V, VI, II, IIII, VII. The only one they got right was the first one, I think it’s safe for me to put my gold stars away. Onwards I noticed the song titles "Lugubrious Face Fuck", "Soaked In Cum" and "Saprophytic Pig Rape" are among the titles, doesn’t quite look like Mozart to me. With all of these elements I figured Pentagoria were going to be another lame talentless clone band offering nothing of interest. After listening to the album several times I realise I should not judge a book by it’s cover, or in this case, a CD by it’s sleeve. Pentagoria offer up eight tracks of original and technical death metal which is actually quite impressive. I don’t really know of any bands to compare them to, however their time changes are reminscent of California’s Disgorge and Deeds Of Flesh, the drumming is remarkably well done considering Tony Williams had only been playing for two and a half years up to the recording of the CD. The riffing of Tony, yes, the drummer, and Nick Kulczycki is impressive and written in strange and difficult patterns, along with the bass playing of Tom Heikes the overall sound the band projects is thick and crushing. Being a vocalist myself, I paid a great deal of attention to the vocals of Scott Bibus. He uses some patterns which remind me of Cannibal Corpse’s Eaten Back To Life, but the majority is just original since I can’t think of another band who plays at the same times as this group. The vocals aren’t overly deep or guttural, however the patterns used are effective enough to make the lack of range much of an issue. I’m very impressed with ...And The Sky Bled Gore and wish more bands would be like Pentagoria and try to develop their own sounds instead of cloning every other popular band in existence. The music is extremely catchy for all of it’s complexity. I definitely recommend picking this one up and look forward to hearing their next album. ""Here piggy piggy. Here piggy pig."" Classic!
