Czech grinders Purulent Spermcanal are back and much has changed since the early days. Infamous for some of the goofiest grooving blast gore and smoked-out sense of humor, Ostrava’s Purulent Spermcanal offer a big departure from the style that made them either loved or hated. I must admit I am a huge fan of the earlier stuff so I was initially a bit disappointed by this release and it took a long time to sink in. No more high-pitched screams. No more intros that are longer than the songs for no other reason than the band wanted it that way. Expectations are best left for predictable bands and Purulent Spermcanal have grown beyond that stage. Have The Munchies moves the band away from their comical sound towards a more raging, pure form of grindcore. Their strength now is tight and inventive riffing, well heard with a thick and full production, and energetic compositions. New singer Jarek has a deep and raw voice that is free of effect processors and other absurd augmentations that comprised the old sound. The lyrical focus is on the beautiful mix of reefer and food. Songs like "Steak Dance", "Roast Pork", and "Kebabjazz" keep the focus on your guts instead of your cock. Gone are the long fucking and screaming intros as we are now treated to some off-kilter homegrown jazz breakdowns. The breaks are odd and awkward and therein lay the connection to the old sound. What is consistent from earlier releases is the visceral assault of grind mixed with smoked out departures. Old P.S. was made for drinking yourself retarded and cramming your dick into the closest pungent orifice. The new P.S. reminds me of that goofy scene in Rocky where he pumps up by punching beef except Rocky didn’t smoke a lot of grass and wasn’t cool enough to listen to Dead Infection. I’ve heard people say they can hear a NYHC influence in the straight ahead riffing and vocal delivery but Agnostic Front didn’t listen to Dead Infection either. Covers of Sepultura’s "Refuse/Resist" and Napalm Death’s "Antibody" further enforce the old school grind feel. The same cartoonish art that graced the previous releases is back and this time features a pair of yuppies getting flattened into the street by a paving truck. Purulent Spermcanal have always ruled and this release only improves their legacy. I would suck a wet fart from my mother’s ass to see this band play live. Get a Budvar and sit down to a hot plate of Czech grind courtesy of these seasoned grinders. Fans of the older stuff will be pleased to know that some older unreleased Purulent Spermcanal is slated for U.S. release on vinyl by summer of ‘04 that will grind cocks to Ken humps.
