In general I’m not a huge fan of brutal death metal, over the years I just grew to dislike the genre as a whole due to the over-abundance of absolutely shitty power chord mosh music under the guise of being "brutal". Brutal music doesn’t make you want to run around in a circle, brutal music makes you want to take a shit in the middle of a crowded subway car, then take it into your mouth and spit it in some old fat guy’s beard. Every once in a while I like to be reminded that brutality can still be cool, and this pleasant reminder came from the naked Asian bowling ball, better known as Copremesis‘ Paulo. He sent me material of his bands’ latest split with Tennessee’s Pustulated, but I declined his offer of autographed pictures of himself nude spinning the CD on his penis, although I’m sure it probably would fit in the tight little hole. Pustulated start things off with 6 tracks of gurgling-from-deep-in-your-anus, pound-your-fat-fucking-face-in and take-a-dump-in-your-stew brutality. The music is simplistic, play as fast as you can, hit every piece of the drum kit as fast and hard as you can and gurgle as sickly as you can without shitting your pants or puking all over the mic. For whatever bizarre reason I can’t stop listening to the music they recorded for this split. I hear it and I realize it’s stupid, but at the same time, it’s so over-the-top brutal that I can’t help but want to listen to it again and again. Its hypnotic, like fellow-inbreds Brodequin, which isn’t surprising considering their old drummer, Chad Walls is behind the kit, beating the holy hell out of drum kit like a redheaded stepchild. Now that’s brutal! Even their cover of Impetigo’s "Boneyard" is pretty solid. Up next are Copremesis, who have a slightly different approach to ultra-brutality, playing a slightly more generic style, with more intro/outro samples from various movies, in typical silly brutal NYDM fashion. Their sound actually reminds me of Malignancy, who I’ve never been a huge fan of, but they do have their moments where they show real promise, for such a stagnant genre of music. Their two live songs sound great, but for the most part, the in-studio recorded material comes off a little stale, although the sampling on "Thoughts", taken from some Japanese anime, do make their stuff worth listening to. Overall, in the battle for ultimate supremacy, Pustulated wins on musical merits, but Copremesis takes the overall title, because their fat guitarist likes to roll around on stage naked, showing no shame in showing the world his 2 inch penis buried in the fury stringy mansnatch he can’t seem to keep contained in his pants. Disturbing, but brutal!
