As some people may know, when I’m not rambling on about metal, I’m a student over at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Around town there’s this place called Decent Pizza, which has to be the greatest work of marketing and business genius in the world. Why do you ask? Think about it: decent pizza. It’s impossible to be under whelmed! If you go there and receive a mediocre pizza, you can’t complain because you paid for a mediocre pizza; it says so in the name. But if the pizza is excellent, the satisfaction is even more so as you were expecting more or less mediocre pizza. The only way the model actually fails is in the rare event that they somehow hire Ratboy the Retarded Penis-handed Dwarfed Leper to make the pizza and he accidentally jizzes and shits all over the pizza, attracting al sorts of diseased vermin and maggots to infest the pizza before it hits the oven and then your plate; that certainly wouldn’t be decent. That’s probably the only worse case scenario that could make them fuck up their business model of decent pizza.
Reek of Shits, just at face value, invokes a similar sense of awe in me. Just looking at the name, I say the same thing to myself. Think about it. If you bought a Reek of Shits album and it absolutely fucking sucked, could you really complain? If they were called Reeks of Guttural Intensity, oh yeah- you could complain because it sounds fucking awesome. But not with Reeks of Shits: you’re paying for something that reeks of shit! It says so right there!
Luckily, Reeks of Shits does not actually reek of shit. True to their Czech heritage, Reeks of Shits belts out a catchy, blistering slab of Napalm Death and Carcass inspired goregrind. Songs are varied, knowing the exact times to divvy up the straight grinding action and when to play around with more slowed down, head-banging rhythm. Nothing overly technical to wrap your mind around, some grade A guttural belching, and some surprisingly clear drumming. Throw on a pretty decent Napalm Death cover, and you got yourself a solid grindcore album.
Reek of Shits is a lot like Decent Pizza. It’s kind of hard to be under whelmed, but at the same time it’s not going to become the greatest thing since Asia Argento decided to go naked in a movie. It’s solid, and definitely for those that want some more Czech grind.
