Don’t ever listen to this album if you cannot take the shit life deals out. The music contained within just might give the push you need to blow your worthless brains out. Yeah, I’m being melodramatic but this album makes me feel like there is no hope and the world is huge, swirling black hole of negativity. The duo vocalists scream and growl in a throaty delivery while spewing forth their words of plight. They each shine in a different way with their different voices. One of the vocalists sounds as if he was choking himself while recording and he loved every minute of it. The music as a whole ranges from crushing and plodding to complex carnage and chaos. The guitar playing found here is phenomenal and contains a great deal of variety to keep your attention. Pounding you in the testicles one moment then melodically surging throughout your entire aural system and almost, almost creating a sense of triumph, repeated listenings are necessary to fully appreciate the playing on The End Of Nothing. Blasts and fills are solid and do not get repetitive as the drummer mixes his playing up at all the right times. An initial complaint of mine was the production of the drums is a tad weak but in retrospect it completes the harsh, cold environment of Rune. What really sets this album apart from the pack are the extras they possess. Four people are credited in the liner notes with noise in addition to their instruments. They may feel this is sufficient but simply describing it as noise does not sit well with me as a spoken word passage, what I assume is a violin (I’m instrument retarded) and aural textures are employed and all give birth to an ambiance unlike most bands out there can even fathom invoking. On to the aesthetic values of this album; the artwork is somewhat abstract and perfectly supplements the cold and barren music. Shades of gray and black are used all through the sleeves. Dead trees, textures and medical book drawings are assembled to form a complete and visually gratifying piece. Overall, the design is great and all of the text is easily readable. I fucking hate when the font is a color you can’t read on top of the graphics. I always think, "way to go asshole, I can’t read shit so maybe I should have downloaded it instead." But the question remains are they death metal, grind, what? It’s hard to classify a band like this because whatever label they fall under is one of their own. Rune combines their different talents so well I don’t think using any single label does the band justice. With everything said, Rune has created a tremendous album that I equate to fucking a fat chick. You feel gross afterwards and maybe even depressed but you go back for more.
