Sadis Euphoria is yet another band I’d never heard of until being introduced to their music by Jason Tipton, label owner of Willowtip Records. I remember hearing one advance from their Frigid Silence Spilling mCD and finding myself very eager to hear as much more of this band as I possibly could.
I was extremely surprised when I received this disc in the mail and read the attached bio stating that no member of the band was over the age of 19 when the album was recorded. I remember when I was 19 I had the attention span of a gnat. My only interests in life were getting drunk as regularly as possible and heavily as possible and trying to think of new ways to get laid without actually having to resort to getting up the nerve to just ask a girl out. I did have a band at the time and I believe we were about as technical and tight sounding as The Doors after a month-straight coke, heroin and alcohol binge.
When I get demos from 16-19 year olds I’m expecting to hear something sloppy, unpolished and incredibly lame, however, I should know better than to expect things just because someone is young. I was amazed to found out a few months ago that the guys in Amsvartner were all still in junior high when they released The Trollish Mirror, and last year’s Decapitated debut basically solidified the point that age is meaningless as long as you can prove you actually know how to play, and over a 15 minute period, Sadis Euphoria prove, without a doubt, that they can really play.
Sadis Euphoria play a catchy blend of technical deathgrind with a hypnotic rhythm, pounding beats and some of the most aggressive and energetic vocals I’ve heard in someone that young since the days I’d drunkenly bash microphones into my forehead busting myself open while gurgling about whatever entered my head and scaring the shit out of the neighbours whose houses adjoined the garage we rehearsed in.
Musically the closest and most honest comparison would be made to fellow-Pittsburgh based deathgrinders Circle Of Dead Children. There is a strong difference however, while Circle Of Dead Children do have a few strange tracks and slow/mid-paced tracks, Sadis Euphoria is a non-stop whirlwind of aggression. Think of any of Circle Of Dead Children’s heavy and brutal onslaughts and make it more technical and you’ve got the basic idea of what this band sounds like. Hell, vocalist Steve Sherer could easily pass as Joe Horvath, well, vocally and lyrically at least.
Quite honestly age really has no relevance when speaking about this band. The members could be 15 years old or 45; the fact of the matter is that they write catchy, energetic music in an aggressive style that will appeal to fans of grinding death metal of the new millennium. If you’re into Circle Of Dead Children, Pig Destroyer, Creation Is Crucifixion and the like, then Sadis Euphoria is definitely a band that will appeal to you. They’re young, and the scary thing is, they’re only going to get better. I can hardly wait to hear where they go from here.
If you’re in a band and you feel threatened by the maturity of their music and how good they are for their age, just remember, you’re older than they are, and chances are you’re bigger than they are, and if they continue kicking your band’s ass musically, you can always drag them into a washroom stall at their high school and give them all swirlies.
