Thank them for not using drum triggers. A forewarning to anyone reading this, I’m one of those people who loved the first two Satyricon albums (what I call "old Satyricon") and could care less for the rest ("new Satyricon"). "A Moment Of Clarity" opens up this mCD, beginning at a mid pace with "old Satyricon-ish" style riffs and a dark, moody atmosphere presented immediately (Sanrabb of Gehenna is handling guitars by the way). The first half of the song moves well, fairly slow paced and one-dimensional, and then this goofy blasting part comes and throws the feeling off totally. I don’t know if this is the intention or not, I can see how it might work, but I don’t get it. I lose interest for a bit, then a slow part similar to the sliding-riff in "Mother North" (the only song on Nemesis… I really like) regains my attention and the song finishes shortly thereafter with the same cold feelings it began with. So far, pretty cool. The next track…they covered "INRI"!! It’s fast. Faster than fuck. But it’s too tight!! Sarcofago is not about being on time with each other…you are supposed to play as fast as possible and leave each other alone!!! This is a cool way to get more people into Sarcofago, though. A "clean vision mix" of the song "Nemesis Divina" follows, but I don’t remember the original enough to notice any major difference. "Blessed From Below" closes the mCD, a spacey, dark, peaceful ambient-ish piece with guitar interlude, written by Snorre (Thorns) & Satyr together (it’s fairly obvious who wrote what part). As I write this review months after the CD has been released, I have better understanding and appreciation despite not being overly thrilled with the material. I’ve got to hand it to Satyricon staying ahead of the game. This release is interesting enough where I’m curious again to hear what Satyricon’s upcoming album will offer. If it continues in this vein, it will end up being an album of interesting parts meshed with strange, avant garde-ish silliness that will end up throwing the whole thing into a love/hate ordeal. I personally won’t have the patience to deal with it, at least not right now.
