Oh, how the mighty have fallen……

After 25+ years, Slayer can obviously do whatever they want without giving a fuck about what anyone else thinks of them.   Unfortunately, they’ve apparently chosen to completely bore the shit out of anyone within earshot.   I’ve come to that pained conclusion having been a long-time fan of the band.   As a matter of fact, it wasn’t long ago that any rumor of an upcoming Slayer release would be cause for an instant boner – and a possible premature ejaculation, as well.   Honestly, simply because of Reign In Blood, the band could record themselves farting into a glass jar and I’d by the CD, though I’d probably pass on the DVD.   While many Teufel’s Tomb readers may have it, I haven’t met anyone else that has a copy of “Sick Boy” in their Slayer collection like I do.  This band has been a personal favorite of mine for a long, long time.

In fairness, Slayer really doesn’t qualify as an underground band at this point.   But, after repeated listens of World Painted Blood I had an innate need to comment on it, and this was the best forum in which to do so.   Also, who among us hasn’t had some type of connection to Slayer?   While there are varying opinions on the band at this point, there is no denying their overall impact on metal over the years.

So the album, unfortunately, sounds like the band is going through the motions.   As much as I wanted to like it, it sounds like a case of “we don’t really give a fuck.”   Throughout their career, Slayer has consistently offered up some cool riffs, and their playing is as tight as a nun’s asshole.   But the band has clearly run out of ideas, and is simply rehashing music that they’ve put out before now.

There are a few highlights:  the title song is pretty cool until the ultra-stupid half-time section.  “Beauty Through Order” has a creepy feel to it that will grow on you, until the fucking god-awful guitar solo appears, and “Psychopathy Red” shows what the album could have been if some effort had been put into it.

However, there is so much mediocre crap here that a loyal Slayer fan should feel insulted. “Hate Worldwide” and “Public Display Of Dismemberment” are both so mindless that it’s hard to know what the band was thinking when these songs were written.  “Human Strain” actually offers a unique change of pace, but I swear to God I thought it had to be a cover song the first time I heard it.   And, for some reason, the band’s finger picking tendency that appeared on Christ Illusion continues on “Playing With Dolls.

And that’s even before we get to “Americon.” Seriously, this is not only the worst song ever recorded by Slayer; it may also be one of the worst metal songs ever.   Think about that for a minute.   If you listen closely to the beginning of this song, you can almost hear Dave Lombardo playing a fucking cowbell.   Never in my life did I think the day would come when a Slayer song could be so fucking bad.  Coupled with a Kirk Hammett-inspired wah pedal fetish and stupid fucking juvenile lyrics – “it’s all about the motherfucking oil” oh, really, Kerry? thanks for that bit of intellectual insight – this song is a complete embarrassment to the band’s career.   I’m listening to this crap as I type this and getting more and more pissed off by the minute.   Can you imagine this garbage being included on Reign In Blood?

In recent interviews, the band members have hinted that they may be ready to retire in a few years.   All I can say is, that time has now arrived.  No question, Slayer’s contribution to metal is legendary.   But at this rate, their next album should be titled “God Help Us All.”

I really enjoyed Christ Illusion, but I’ve gotta agree, World Painted Blood just lacks the energy, emotion and song writing of their prior releases. They show brief glimpses of brilliance, but for the most part this album is pretty forgettable, which is too bad because I was really starting to look forward to it after hearing the Psychopathy Red single.

I wouldn’t call this album completely worthless, but I definitely don’t think I’ll be listening to this much.

At least they’re still fucking awesome live…

I wasn’t sure if I was going to rate it worthless at first, but then I figured it didn’t really matter. I can never decide which Slayer album is my absolute favorite, but this makes choosing their worst one easy It’s too bad because I wanted to really like it but I cringe each time I listen to it.

I’m going to have to check this out. But it doesn’t surprise me that it is bad. Who the hell listens to Slayer these days except for live shows and their old records? Everything that came after “Divine Intervention” was a horrible steaming pile of duda bullshit.

Fuck yeah, Divine Intervention was their last worthy album. Diabolus had it’s moments and the song “Disciple” is cool. Slayer bores me more than the radio these days. Way to milk that boring sound for a decade.

I really liked Undisputed Attitude, although that was almost all cover songs. Christ Illusion was decent, but the last Slayer album that totally blew me away was Seasons in the Abyss, which, to this day, is still my favorite Slayer album.

World Painted Blood is better than Divine Intervention, Diabolus In Musica, Endgame, United Abominations, and Death Magnetic.

Listening to new Slayer is kind of a guilty pleasure for me especially since the only good album by them, in my opinion, since Seasons in the Abyss was Christ Allusion and even that record was merely decent, nothing to write home about. I like World Painted Blood but I will admit that it still doesn’t top any of their older works. Also, Americon is an annoying song, the worst on the whole album.

It’s funny. When Divine Intervention came out everybody was crying that it was their worst. Nowadays they would cheer if Slayer made something even remotely sounding like that album. In my opinion they might as well started saving all their songwriting powers in the mid 90’s to make one excellent album that came out around now, instead of smearing it in diluted form over everything after Divine Intervention.

By the way, I’ll probably buy this one. Just not right now. More likely cheap, on a fleamarket from a disapointed fan…

I wanted to like this too, I really did, but I am really disappointed with this album. Specifically:

    • the title track: the length (songs longer than five minutes works for some bands, Slayer is not one of them) and that stupid speaking section from the 4:10 mark that sounds like it should be on a Slipknot album
    • the guitar solo on ‘Snuff’ sounds completely tuneless – in fact, none of the solos have any real bite to them
    • quite a few lines throughout the album are repeated about four times each
    • the songwriting seems to appeal more to mainstream metal fans, and the music suffers because of it
    • another needless speaking bit on ‘Human Strain’
    • ‘Americon’ SUCKS
    • ‘Psychopathy Red’ is the only decent track on the album, even then it isn’t very memorable
    • the production takes away all the force this album could’ve had, it merely gently flows into my ears instead of crushing my eardrums like I expect a Slayer album to

I was listening to Reign In Blood earlier today, and the difference in quality between that and World Painted Blood is disconcertingly huge. If Slayer’s next album is like this, it’ll be time to hang it up. I’m sure the commercialist arse-lickers at Metal Hammer UK and MetalSucks.net and similar ‘zines will eat this up like they did Death Magnetic this time last year, and motherfuck them in their furry metalcore butts for doing so.

Previously, I would have ranked either “Christ Illusion” or “Diabolus in Musica” as a sort of two way tie for the Slayer album I felt was the weakest. Both albums are ok, and each one has some decent songs, but after picking up “World Painted Blood”, I can say I now know which album I consider Slayer’s worst. “World Painted Blood” is just mediocre, there’s no other way to put it. I was able to find bright spots on Slayer’s last three, but this album is narcolepsy inducing. Granted, it’s still leagues better than anything Metallica has put out in the last 20 years, but that isn’t saying much.

WOW, this is some kind of anti-SLAYER forum… everyone is a really “big” fan
and feels the need to bash the new album. Boo-hoo! “Reign In Blood” came out 23 yrs ago, “World Painted Blood” is fuckin fresh and killz!

    • Pile Driver wrote:

The fact that you consider this release “fuckin fresh” and while spelling ‘kills’ with a z is fucking hilarious. I think Teufel just posted a Black Dahlia Murder review inspired by prepubescent retards like you.

      • Dysenteric wrote:

Now, now, I think Xlip has a point. I mean, compared to the loads of colour-by-numbers deathcore/metalcore albums that came out this year, World Painted Blood is sort of fresh, and certainly better, as I can listen to it without getting the urge to slash my wrists with my keys, regardless of what I said in my post.

        • Pile Driver wrote:
          November 29, 2009 at 4:27 pm

I can agree with you in looking at it from that perspective. My disappointment in the CD – and what I tried to convey in the review – lies in the fact that instead of reading everyone post comments like “it’s a great new fucking Slayer release” we’re more likely to read posts stating “well, at least it’s better than the new Killswitch Engage CD.” That should be a given as far as I’m concerned.

fuking hilarious is the fact that my shitty band gets Excellent review in these very pages, while retards like you get a forum to write nonsense about SLAYER.

boo hoo hoo! the album lacks the slayer sound, that`s one! dave lombardo`s work makes me wonder if he hired a drum machine to play his part, that`s two!
they even managed to rip off a song from their previous album, playing with dolls is an alternative rip off of supremist, that`s three! and last!
why are you assholes whining about Americon? it`s not talking about the u.s. citizens, it`s not about your country! it`s about the imbeciles sending thousands of troops to die for lies! it`s about, fuck why do i even bother?
if anyone critizing noticed that`s slayer talking straight for the 1st time!
no masks and have you asswipes realized that`s the song with the shortest lyrics?
no `cause they even chickened out a little or they did it so they wouldn`t hurt your little baby minds so hard! santa claus doesn`t exist!
plus lately old bands sound as if they want to update their sound to the new gay core standards check out machinehead`s the blackening if you doubt it!

my mistake i meant to say jihad! not supremist and i forgot to add these word i have been repeating constantly over the years. Bands if you want to experiment with different trends FUCKING CHANGE THE NAME OF THE BAND! or do a side project!
think of a lot of side projects from bands that didn`t just put their trademark band name just to make sure it made money! it take balls to try new things but you gotta give something away in return! let go of your Fame`s umbilical Chord!

by the way i know it`s cord so save it… for later!

Lets all just chill and be honest. Metal music is mainly aimed at kids, we were all kids when Slayer etc all came out and kicked our arse, now were older and they’re still aiming their music at kids.

I’m not 16 anymore and Slayer are no where near their mid twenities/thirties when they were still kicking arse.

So either grow up and accept that your childhood hero band that you’ve carried a hard on for since high school is older, slower and may not meet your needs anymore or go find another band that is still ‘true’ and rehashing the same shit from the 80s that they were 20 years ago.

Also lets all just be grateful that they lasted longer than Anthrax, Metallica and Megadeth before they started to really suck!!!!!

Their first three albums, especially Hell Awaits weren’t just aiming to be brutal and heavy with a lot of forced TUFF attitude like you find on this one. When I think if Slayer I think of their old school complex songs that were completely awesome on every level. In a way Reign in Blood was the end of Slayer as they dropped everything but simplistic song writing and speed afterwards. I don’t know what to think of this new album other than something about it grates on my nerves and I don’t want to hear it again. The only thing they’ve done I’ve liked since Reign was their cover album. I’ll go listen to new Nile, or if its thrash, man, Toxic Holocaust isn’t as bad as you’re told, this stuff coasts to close to the mall metal uppercrust for my comfort.

this album kicks fukin ass – i listen to it over and over again almost every day and thats it! – this is the best album for 18 years, they put out a monster and i can tell you that i waited for something like that from the best metal band of all time since i was 18 – now i am 36 and i am happy for it

I have never found Slayer to be interesting or worthy of mention. Sure there legacy in metal is pretty darn big, and dare I say they are one of the real defining acts in metal, I think I do. But do they deserve it? no not at all. Between the boring riffs and the child like riffs, I concede that I simply do not “get” them. To me, they are DEP, they are Malevolent Creation, they are Morbid Angel, Bands I simply do not like, yet feel I should because everyone else seems to sing there praise.

Then again, everyone loves Coldplay and voted for the Nazis :P

      Nice Peep Show reference.

I sometimes get the feeling that I should like certain bands just because they’re critically acclaimed. 9 times out of 10 I listen to a band with lots of credentials like Metallica, Testament, Opeth, Cannibal Corpse etc., and I either hate or am indifferent to them. But at the end of the day it’s best not to care too much what other people think of bands you’re not a fan of.
